Hamilton's Squad

When I first found Hamilton’s Squad on Twitter, I knew that I had to work with her. For awhile, I had no idea who was behind the hilarious Twitter and Instagram account. For those who don’t know, Hamilton’s Squad takes pictures of the Broadway musical Hamilton and gives them aptly funny captions. Sounds silly? It’s not. It’s all so witty, on point, and deeply hilarious.

The force behind Hamilton’s Squad is none other than New York actress Hollis Jane. I first heard of Hollis Jane when she wrote a blisteringly flawless blog post about being a little person in Miley Cyrus’ 2013 VMA performance. Hollis spoke candidly about what it felt like to be laughed at, and she writes about her feelings so carefully and eloquently. She’s funny, and she’s also honest. She’s a smart woman, savvy and fierce. It was an honor to have her in my studio and to create this portrait of her.

I have had this Alice Andrews parachute skirt for quite awhile, and it’s paired here with a killer dress from Nasty Gal. This skirt is amazing because it’s long, light, and so easy to move around. I wanted to create a portrait of Hollis that was extraordinarily dramatic and vast. I love the fierceness of her pose against the softness of the skirt. Michelle Elise created Hollis’ hair and makeup look, and I adore the softness of her updo. It contrasts nicely with the drama of the skirt.

Hollis recently moved back to New York, and the city is lucky to have her. If you’re not following her already, and you’re a fan of Hamilton, find Hamilton’s Squad on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll be glad you did.
