If you haven't heard about Hamilton by now...well, where have you been? In my years of being a theatre fan and theatrical photographer, I have never seen any single Broadway show with as much of an audience, appeal, mass reach, and frenetic fan base before. Hamilton an American Musical is a Broadway powerhouse unlike any other, and Javier Munoz is an Alexander Hamilton unlike any I've seen before.
If you've been living under a rock in 2016 and don't know, Hamilton is a Broadway musical about the life and times of Alexander Hamilton, an American Founding Father.
The lyrics, music and book by are all by one man : Lin-Manuel Miranda, basing his hit musical on the 2004 Ron Chernow biography Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton opened Off-Broadway at The Public Theater in 2015.
It played to sold out houses for the entirety of its' run at the Public. The show then moved to Broadway in August of 2015, where it plays to sold out audiences nightly at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.
The Off-Broadway production was honored with the 2015 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical. The Broadway production was nominated for a record-shattering 16 Tony Awards. Hamilton has received the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. It has also been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Hamilton is not Javier Munoz's first collaboration with Lin-Manuel Miranda. He first appeared in In The Heights, where he took over for Mr. Miranda and then played the role of Usnavi in the United States national tour.
