New York Portrait Pictures

When I think about being a New York portrait artist, I first have to define what that genre of photography is. I have to know what being a New York portrait artist means to me, and what a New York portrait artist is to my clients.

I believe that this image of Ciara Renee exemplifies what it means to be a portrait artist. Ciara Renee is an amazing actress, musician, and singer. I first saw her on Broadway as The Witch in Big Fish alongside Norbert Leo Butz. Her voice was so phenomenal and her presence onstage so brilliant that I knew that I had to work with her! After Big Fish, Ciara Renee went on to be the Leading Player in Pippin on Broadway. She is also well known as Esmeralda in The Hunchback of Notre Dame at La Jolla Playhouse and the Paper Mill Playhouse. She can currently be seen on television in the role of Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl in DC's Legends of Tomorrow on the CW. This show is considered a spin-off of The Flash and Arrow, and it’s great fun!

I photographed Ciara Renee while she was still in Big Fish, and I wanted a dramatic portrait that reflected the sensibilities of her Big Fish character. I knew that for this portrait to become art it had to rise above standard portraits that I had created before. I chose to fill my studio with smoke and steam. I love how her face is juxtaposed against the drama of the dark background and the smoke. I love how the black lace both highlights and obscures her face. I especially love how the light perfectly illuminates her gorgeous profile.

I think that this image really is an artistic portrait, and I am thrilled to share it with you.
