Best Portrait Photographer NYC

If I’m going to be a New York-based portrait photographer, I’m determined to be the best portrait photographer in NYC!

..

In 2015, I had the amazing opportunity to create portraits of Broadway actress Ali Stroker. Ali was starring in the Deaf West production of Spring Awakening. She had also recently responded to a shoot of Kylie Jenner in a wheelchair with her own stellar photoshoot, the difference between Stroker and Jenner is that Ali is in a wheelchair in real life. Kylie Jenner is not.

..

In an incredible interview for You Do You, Stroker stated, "Being in a chair brings such a different perspective to things. Everyday I’m seeing the world through, what I have decided to be, a powerful lens. Not only do I literally see the world from a different perspective, but I see the way people receive me, which is such a reflection of where we are. I also see, through what I’ve accomplished, that I have the power to shift that by feeling powerful in myself."

Ali Stroker is a powerful presence. She is a portrait photographer’s dream. She’s phenomenally beautiful, for one. Her skin, her hair, and her eyes are luminous. She moves through the world with an astonishing grace of body and spirit. She’s also wickedly funny, sweet, and very, very smart. She’s a glowing star in front of the camera, and a beautiful soul through and through. It was a great honor to be Ali’s portrait photographer, and an honor that I did not take lightly.

..

My goal was to create incredible portraits of this powerful woman, but to do it in a gracefully beautiful manner. I usually create portraits like this with artificial light, but we happened to be doing this portrait session in my home near an open window. I used a homemade v-flat to bounce some light back onto Ali, and didn’t need a single strobe at all. I love the soft natural light and how it contrasts gently with the fierceness of her outfit.

..

I am working as hard as possible to be the best portrait photographer in NYC. I take my job very seriously. I take the responsibility seriously as well. Ali Stroker is a marvelous human being, and deserved marvelous portraits to match. I can only hope that I’ve done this extraordinary portrait subject justice. It was a true treat to spend the afternoon creating portraits for her. It’s a portraits session that I won’t soon forget!
