Lighthouse at Chelsea Pier Wedding PhotographerSometimes magical things happen when you go to set up a photograph. Would you believe that this image was made possible by a belt? I was looking for a way to photograph the bride’s fantastic shoes at this Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers wedding over Memorial Day 2012 and the first thing that I noticed was the symmetrical lines of the Manhattan skyscraper outside of the window in the bride’s suite. I knew that to suspend the shoes in front of that fantastic skyline I’d need something to hold them in place. I went searching around her suite for something and found a small gold JCrew belt near one of her bridesmaid’s suitcases. I put the heels of the shoes through the belt buckle and had my assistant stand on a chair and hold the belt so that the shoes were floating in front of the window. I shot this lens with one of my favorite Nikkor lenses, the 85mm f/1.4. I chose to shoot it at f.2/8 so that the shoes would entirely be in focus but the background would still be soft in the distance.
