Where? :  Hotel Monaco, the Powel House, and Union Trust.

When? : June 2018

Clearly this summer is “photograph lots of weddings in renovated old banks” month!  From Capitale to Cipriani and now over to Philadelphia’s Union Trust, it’s been a gorgeous month of soaring ceilings, expansive spaces, and excellent renovations!  Stephanie and Nickolas had a day that was pure Philadelphia joy from start to finish.  From their preparations in the popular Hotel Monaco to the gorgeous outdoor Greek ceremony at the Powel House, their charming indoor portraits at Powel surrounded by beautiful old architecture to their outdoor portraits around classic Philadelphia landmarks, ending at their reception inside the iconic Union Trust building, the entire day was full of history, sunshine, and sweetness.

What? :Synagogue wedding and indoor reception in a converted bank building

Where? : Cipriani 42nd Street

When? : May 2018

So far this summer has been full of converted bank venues and rainy days!  Thankfully the rain held off for this particular event, and I’m so glad it did!  This warm, wonderful couple are as funny as they come.  They got married surrounded by their equally funny families, collegiate improv teams, and some gorgeous summery decor.  From the nonstop laughter in the bridal prep room to the groom’s brother’s toast delivered mostly in rap, the whole day was fun, funny, and bright from start to finish.  This summer wedding at Cipriani 42nd Street was practically perfect in every way!

Rainy day wedding at Capitale

Wedding at Capitale

Who? : Dani + Jordan

What? : Indoor wedding and reception in a former bank in Manhattan

Where? : Capitale

When? : May 2018

What do you get when you combine a rainy summer day, a converted bank building, a fantastic dance party, and some of the warmest people I’ve ever met?  You get Dani and Jordan’s wedding day.  From the first time I met this dynamic couple I knew their day was going to be full of sweetness and light – and Dani’s infectious laugh.  I’ve always been a fan of the dark, dreamy architecture of Manhattan’s converted bank wedding venues, and this couple used the space to perfection.

Who? : Guy + Jamie

What? : Manhattan City Hall ceremony with portraits on the waterfront in Brooklyn

Where? : Brooklyn Bridge Park, Brooklyn, New York

When? : May 2018

As a wedding photographer, being hired by another wedding photographer is a huge honor.  Guy and Jamie had the perfect New York wedding day : a first look in a pretty park, saying “I do” in the historic City Clerk’s Office, a few quick family pictures on the city street, and then off to Brooklyn for portraits with the views of Manhattan in the distance.  Simple, sweet, and oh so just right!

Wedding at Rock Creek Gardens

Who? : Jocinda + Keith

What? : Outdoor garden ceremony and tented reception

Where? : Rock Creek Gardens in Puyallup, Washington

When? : August 2017

Being hired to photograph the wedding of another wedding photographer is an extraordinarily huge honor.  Jocinda and Keith are both photographers, which made the honor doubly incredible.  I was blown away by the beauty of Rock Creek Gardens, the incredibly sweet way Jocinda and Keith are around each other, and the sheer brilliance of the light in Puyallup.  The air had a dreamy haze because of wildfires in Canada, and everything shimmered in the unseasonably warm temperatures.  Jocinda and Keith planned a day with beautiful details, plenty of time for sweet portraits, a faithful and heartfelt ceremony, and a reception under a crisp white tent.  It was a gorgeous day, made even more beautiful by the two amazing people who were married under that brilliantly hot Washington summer sun.

Here is a slideshow teaser of the day:

Summer Wedding at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Who? : Rita + Andre

What? : Outdoor garden ceremony and indoor greenhouse reception at an botanic garden…in the rain!

Where? : Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Brooklyn, New York

When? : June 2017

This gorgeous venue has such a place in my heart.  Partly it’s because I live within walking distance, partly because it’s just so dreamily, insistently perfect.  I have never seen the rain held off from a wedding ceremony by sheer will and determination, but on this day I did!  The downpours stopped precisely twice : once for the portraits of Rita and Andre together, and once for the brief outdoor ceremony. It was an honor to document the wedding of these two dynamic individuals.  From Rita’s impeccable red lips to Andre’s gorgeous heart, the day was a dream from start to finish.  (There was even a rainbow.  Because of course there was!)

When? : June 2017

I have been completely delighted with Nikki ever since our first phone call.  In fact, the first note that I ever took about her wedding was “Bride is marvelous.”  I have loved every second of working with this fantastic couple.  From photographing their intimate weekday church ceremony to photographing their wedding day at Long Island’s historic Oheka Castle, every second spent with this couple is a fantastic one.  Nikki and Andrew light up the room, and it’s been an honor to work with them!

What? : Wedding in a historic basilica, portraits at the Rodan Museum, and reception in a modern hotel ballroom.

Where? : Wedding at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul and reception at The Logan

When? : June 2017

Alison and Jeremy have been a delight to work with from the very start.  From our first in-person meeting to their glorious sunset engagement session, it’s been a joy working with these two and their incredible families.  I have loved The Logan in Philadelphia for years, having gotten ready there for my own wedding back when it was the Four Seasons.  I also well remember the first wedding I ever shot at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul.  The combination of those two spectacular venues makes for a very iconic Philly wedding, and the addition of a quick stop at the Rodin Museum for portraits made this day nothing short of perfect.  The pouring rain  that had threatened all day stopped the second the ceremony was over, and the skies opened up for some gorgeous light during their portraits together, which was truly a sight to see.

Alison and Jeremy, thank you so much for having us be a part of your day.  You truly had a dream team of collaborators working on your wedding, from Evantine to Eric at the Logan, and it’s always wonderful to work with such amazing artists!

This winter wedding at the Kimmel Center was freezing cold outside but warm and welcoming inside! The bride started her day at the beautiful Ritz Carlton in Philadelphia’s famed City Center.  From there, the bride and groom went with their wedding party to Rittenhouse Square for some portraits before heading to the Kimmel Center for their ketubah signing, ceremony, and reception.

Wedding at the Central Park Boathouse

There is something so special about a wedding at the Central Park Boathouse.  There are few venues that embody the iconic New York feel of the Loeb Boathouse, and few places in New York with such a brilliant park right outside the front door.  A feature in many movies and TV shows set in New York such as Gossip Girl, 27 Dresses, and more, Bethesda Terrace is one of my favorite portrait locations in Manhattan – and it’s adjacent to the Boathouse!  It’s such a seamless transition from the portrait session to the reception, and I can think of few locations in New York with such ease and beauty.

wedding at the Central Park Boathouse
Before the wedding at the Central Park Boathouse, we started the day at the elegantly modern Mark Hotel. I’m a huge fan of the geometric floors in the lobby, which are carried throughout each perfectly appointed suite. The bride’s suite had brilliant natural light. It was the perfect backdrop for the getting-ready part of the day!
outdoor wedding at the Central Park Boathouse
How exceptional are these Chiara Ferragni shoes? You can remove the little red heart and velcro on dozens of other quilted symbols. The bride wore these amazing sparkly silver shoes to her wedding reception when it was time to retire her Stuart Weitzman heels for the night!
wedding at the Central Park Boathouse cost
Alex Jenkins of Taffeta Hair and Makeup Design was on hand to create the bride’s wedding day look. She was also there post-ceremony to touch the bride up before family portraits. She did a marvelous job!
wedding at Central Park Boathouse
Just after she was dressed, the bride put her engagement ring back on. Many brides opt to wear their engagement ring on their right hand for the wedding ceremony. This way the wedding band goes on easily. After the ceremony, the engagement ring gets switched back to the left hand, and rests atop the new wedding band!
stuart weitzman wedding shoes
The bride wore these delicate Stuart Weitzman heels for the ceremony, portraits, and most of the reception. I love when beautiful light presents itself at just the right time, which is what happened here! We placed the shoes into the pool of light, and let the bride step in when she was ready!
first look with dad on the wedding day
While the “first look” trend between couples has been popular for years now, the “first look” with the father of the bride is a newer trend that I particularly love. It’s really sweet when a father sees his daughter as a bride for the first time. This particular “first look” did not disappoint. The bride and her family are wonderful, loving, warm people, and this moment is such a beautiful representation of the amazing relationships they have with each other.
boathouse wedding new york
After the bride saw her father for the first time, her grandmother came into the room. It was amazing to see her greet her family. As a wedding photographer, you can make sure your clients are in great light, you can direct what door people enter from, but you cannot create moments like this without natural emotion. These moments are my clients’ own, and I am always so honored to witness and document them.
bride with sister
The moments went on and on, and all I had to do was watch and witness. The bride’s mother and father are incredible people, her brother is warm and funny, and her sister is joyous and sweet. I truly can’t express what an honor it was to get to know these fine people and document their day for them.
st. barts wedding new york
The ceremony took place at St. Bart’s church in Manhattan. St. Barts is a gorgeous church with soaring ceilings, amazing architecture, and a beautiful long aisle! I always adore the moments just after the wedding ceremony when the couple recesses back down the aisle. There are always chances for wonderful images like this one! I love how the groom is looking at his new wife!
st. barts wedding
Being a wedding photographer means that I always have to be ready for moments. Sometimes they’re in your face, and you can’t miss them. Sometimes you have to go looking. I followed the bride and groom after their recessional, and found them alone in a small side chapel of St. Barts. It is never my intention to disrupt such tender moments. For that reason, I stayed further back with a longer lens and just let the bride and groom be alone. What a marvelously tender few minutes they had before the family formals began!
paper airplane wedding programs
I can honestly tell you that THIS is the coolest “going away” idea EVER. The bride and groom created wedding programs that folded into paper airplanes. When they exited St. Barts, the guests threw the airplanes. It was a sweet, fun moment and a wonderful departure from the usual rice or confetti!
St. Barts wedding new york
Before heading to Central Park for more portraits, we took a few minutes to take pictures of the bride and groom together in St. Barts. I love finding amazing light in unconventional places!
manhattan wedding pictures
Images with Manhattan in the background were important to both the bride and the groom. There are so many iconic backgrounds around St. Barts. We were able to work in the neighborhood for a bit, creating portraits in the streets and on the sidewalks, before heading out to Central Park.
Selia Yang wedding dress
The first thing I look for when creating a portrait is the light. This gorgeous pocket of light inside St. Barts made for the perfect setting for a bridal portrait. I love the bride’s stunning Selia Yang wedding gown and delicate veil.

It was time for a few more moments amongst the yellow daffodils, crazy city traffic, and New York background before we hopped into the limo and made our way into Central Park.

Sara Landon and her team at SL Events went way above and beyond being your average wedding coordinator. I can’t think of many event coordinators who would carry a bride across a fence so that she can get into a great place for a wedding day portrait!

Bethesda Fountain in Central Park at sunset is nothing short of magical. When the light pours through the water and surrounds a couple on their wedding day, well, it’s just perfect. Don’t you agree?

The bride and groom had the most wonderfully vivacious bridal party. When Rob Adams of Rob Adams Films asked them to toss their bouquets, they threw them so hard that one actually exploded on the ground! Don’t worry, no bouquets were damaged during this group hug!

We spent a wonderful hour in Central Park taking portraits of the bride and groom, as well as some portraits of the bridal party. Once the sun had fully set, then it was time to head to Loeb Boathouse for the cocktail hour and wedding reception.
central park boathouse reception
Sara Landon and SL Events worked seamlessly with Cress Floral Decorators to transform the Loeb Boathouse into a fantastic space for a wedding reception. Each table was named after a different city. Therefore, each table had a centerpiece befitting each city. The Savannah table featured spanish moss, which might have been my favorite!

After a crazy introduction through a tunnel of glow sticks, the bride and groom took the floor for their first dance!
central park boathouse reception decor
The first dance is one of my favorite parts of a wedding reception. Whether it’s choreographed or just a simple time for the couple to hold each other and twirl around the floor unscripted, it’s always a wonderful opportunity to document naturally unfolding moments!
central park boathouse party
The first dance moved effortlessly into the first dance set. The floor was PACKED, and remained packed for the rest of the reception!
reception at the central park boathouse
The bride’s brother surprised her by singing during her dance with her father. What followed was one of the loveliest moments I’ve ever witnessed at a wedding! Her husband joined her on the dance floor, followed by her mother, then his mother. It was a wonderful group dance, and such a joy to photograph.

Pleasantdale Chateau Wedding

A Pleasantdale Chateau wedding isn’t your average, ordinary wedding.  There is something so special about Pleasantdale, and every time I’ve been there I’ve been so sweetly impressed.  I clearly remember my first Pleasantdale Chateau wedding, which took place during an actual hurricane.  Hurricane Irene landed right on top of a past client’s wedding date, and I was blown away by how seamlessly the Pleasantdale staff handled such a crazy day!  I’ve been to Pleasantdale Chateau weddings in the rain, the fog, the sun, and on this brilliant fall day, in the beautiful moody autumn weather.

Pleasantdale Chateau wedding
We started the day in the Pleasantdale bridal suite. I am a huge fan of the cheerfully patterned wallpaper, the abundance of natural light, and the variety of locations for photography. I was able to spend a few minutes with the bride’s gorgeous engagement ring and delicate band, not to mention her super-sweet, super-tiny, super-darling blush peach Mrs. ring box!
Pleasantdale Chateau wedding cost
One thing I love about a wedding at Pleasantdale Chateau is the variety of backgrounds and locations for pictures throughout the entire estate. The wallpaper in this room is a particular favorite of mine. It looks almost like an old master background from a classic portrait studio! I love how the warmth of the background adds a warmth to the image itself, and how the soft light spilling through the window adds to the golden hue of the space.
Pleasantdale Chateau wedding pricing
The getting-ready portion of the wedding day is always a wonderful opportunity to document moments! I love the dozens (if not hundreds!) of expressions that cross a bride’s face while she’s putting on her dress. This is one of my favorites!
Pleasantdale Chateau wedding prices
I am such a fan of the Mrs. box! It’s a wonderful alternative to an old-fashioned ring box from the jewelry store. They have so many colors that you can choose from, it’s easy to customize your box to the colors of your wedding!
Pleasantdale Chateau wedding photos
There are many wedding venues where one half of the couple gets a great room to prepare in, while the other gets a small space or no space at all! A Pleasantdale Chateau wedding comes with multiple rooms for brides, grooms, and bridal parties to get ready in. The groom had an amazing space all to himself (well, himself and a bunch of hatchets, but I digress…)
Pleasantdale Chateau wedding menu
Even though it was overcast outside, the light coming in through the windows was still direct and dreamy. I love these last few moments of preparation before the day really takes over and everything gets exciting and chaotic!
Pleasantdale Chateau wedding wire
I absolutely and completely love fall weddings. There is something so magical about the fall foliage. A Pleasantdale Chateau wedding is the perfect place to be in the fall. I love the turret peeking out of the foliage in the back of this image. It is such a gorgeous location for portraits!
Pleasantdale Chateau wedding reviews
My clients often ask whether or not they “have to” do a first look, or whether or not they “should” do a first look. I truly believe that is not my decision to make for you. Whether you want to see each other before the ceremony or not, I can help you with a list of pros and cons for each decision. We will make it work, whatever you decide. The day is about YOU, and I truly do want you to choose what works best for you! At this Pleasantdale Chateau wedding, the first look worked best for these clients. I love their reaction to seeing each other for the first time!

This image is a wonderful example of how, as a wedding photographer, you have to stay on top of the unfolding moments! Beautiful moments often lead to other beautiful moments. If you blink, you might miss them!

Every year, clients ask if I have suggestions as to when the fall foliage will be at it’s peak. It’s usually sometime within the last few weeks of October, and the first weeks of November. I was so glad to see that the trees were still holding their leaves for this wedding! It provided a beautiful backdrop for the wedding day portraits of the bride and groom together.
Pleasantdale Chateau wedding decor
The decor was wonderful, marrying the bride and groom’s aesthetic sensibilities with the warm, welcoming atmosphere of Pleasantdale Chateau. I love these vintage-styled cards for their seating card table!
Pleasantdale Chateau wedding reception
The decor for the reception also echoed that same aesthetic. Quietly glamorous, a little rustic, and infinitely welcoming.

The party was lively all night long! I was so very honored to be a part of this day, and even now this image makes me smile. I often get asked if I remember all of the weddings that I shoot. The answer is yes, I really do. When you spend week in and week out with such glorious people, how could you ever forget?

Ocean House Wedding

This Ocean House wedding marked my first time in Watch Hill, Rhode Island.  I’ve photographed in Mystic, Stonington, and nearby Newport, but never Watch Hill.  After spending a glorious summer Saturday there, I’m already ready to go back.    Situated on the tops of the Watch Hill bluffs, the Ocean House is one of only five US resorts to obtain the prestigious triple Five-Star honor.  From the private beach to the croquet lawn, the putting green to the Watch Hill Chapel, every square inch of this property is meticulously designed and maintained.  Danielle and Chris were glorious to work with, and a delight to photograph.  I know this won’t be my last time in Watch Hill – maybe next time I’ll even run into the Ocean House’s best-known neighbor, Taylor Swift!

We started the day in the Morgan Suite at the Ocean House. This two-floor suite was inspired by the interior of yachts. There really are no words for how meticulously, flawlessly designed the space is. You truly do have to see it to believe it!

Danielle and Chris, it was so wonderful to travel to Watch Hill to spend your wedding day with you!  From the phenomenal weather (no rain plans!) to the fantastic party, every bit of your day was perfect.  I hope you’re having a wonderful honeymoon trip, and I can’t wait to share the rest of your images with you soon!

Windows on the Water Wedding

I always love working at venues I’ve never been to before, and this Windows on the Water wedding marked my first time in Millstone Township, New Jersey.  Windows on the Water is a private resort in Monmouth County.  It is also the site of the utterly charming Frogbridge Day Camp, and that campground appeal is part of Windows on the Water’s immense charm.  From beautiful bridges to sun-dappled fields, this really is the perfect place for a summer wedding.  We were so lucky to get glorious weather, after several very rainy weeks!

Windows on the Water wedding photographers
The bride got ready at the American Hotel in Freehold, New Jersey. I was completely charmed by the light in the rooms. The bride and groom had side-by-side rooms with huge balconies and an abundance of natural light.
Windows on the Water weddings
When I arrived at the hotel, Allison was getting her hair and makeup done. I love the cloud of hairspray! The getting ready part of the day is always one of my favorites, and this day didn’t disappoint. Allison was surrounded by her mother, her future mother-in-law, and her sweet bridesmaids. They were so calm and collected, and having a great time together.
Windows on the Water wedding details
Hansen Photo and Video were on hand to film the day. I had never worked with them before, and they were utterly delightful. I can’t say enough good things about them, and could not recommend them more highly.
Windows on the Water wedding pictures
At one point in the day, Allison turned to me and said “This is my dream wedding!” Is there really anything better to hear from a bride on her wedding day?
photos of a Windows on the Water wedding
We had a great amount of time to document everyone getting ready. The bride got dressed in a room right next to the groom, so we had to make sure that no one ran into each other on the balcony outside!
Windows on the Water wedding photos
I can’t say enough good things about the light in the getting-ready room! It was exactly what I love, and I think it illuminates the scene beautifully.
Windows on the Water wedding setup
See what I mean? The highlights and shadows are so beautiful. I could shoot in that room all day long!
Windows on the Water wedding moments
The groom’s mother presented him with a deeply personal gift. I was so honored to be there to document it for them.
Windows on the Water wedding ceremony
The relationship between a groom and his mother is so precious. This entire family was so kind, so sweet, and so wonderful to photograph.
Windows on the Water wedding portrait
I have a lot of favorite things about wedding days. One of them is “crying grooms.” In fact, that might top my list, right above “crying dads” and “playing Uptown Funk so that my 2015 Bruno Mars streak goes unbroken.”
Windows on the Water wedding cost
I had twenty glorious minutes alone with the bride and groom immediately after the outdoor wedding ceremony. The light was utterly perfect. The sun was low in the sky, and created such a gorgeous halo around their bodies.
photos of Windows on the Water wedding
At every wedding I shoot, I strive to make images that I’ve never made before. This rainbow was created entirely in-camera. I didn’t create it in Photoshop later. How was it done? I’ll never tell!
Windows on the Water wedding pic
Allison and Nick were so sweet with each other. Allison is vibrant and joyous, and Nick is so lovely and emotional. It was wonderful to witness.
Windows on the Water wedding price
The Windows on the Water employee who drove us around the property in the golf cart said “I’ve never seen a photographer put brides and grooms in light like that!” That’s one of the highest compliments! I love working with beautiful natural light, and I think this image really illustrates why I feel that it’s so beautiful.

Only twenty minutes for pictures? No problem!

We managed to get to several different locations on the Windows on the Water property in a quick amount of time. It’s all about efficiency! I think the trees make such a glorious background. I love summer weddings!

After a few multiple exposures, it was time to get ready to go back to the reception. I love having time with the bride and groom for portraits, but I never want them to be late to their own party!

Allison and Nick, thank you so much for having me at your wedding.  You were total troupers in the heat!  Thank you for giving us great time after the ceremony for some additional portraits in that beautiful sunset light!  I hope your honeymoon is wonderful!

Brooklyn Botanical Garden Wedding

This Brooklyn Botanical Gardens wedding started with not one, not two, but three engagement session rain-outs.  Despite trying to schedule the session multiple times, the weather kept delaying and pushing back the shoot.  We finally managed to get it done – three days before the actual wedding date!  I was worried that cutting things so close would make the bride and groom nervous, but Jundai and Hong Ma are such lovely, calm people.  The session was remarkable, with the heat and crazy weather giving way to a gloriously beautiful afternoon with brilliant light.

After such a wonderful shoot, I knew that the wedding day itself was going to be just fine.  Jundai and Hong Ma are pure joy.  You can’t help but smile back at them, and when Jundai laughs, you just have to laugh along.  They’re so kind, so sweet, and so endlessly adorable together.  The entire day was full of brilliant light, perfect weather, and utterly charming moments.  The Brooklyn Botanical Garden wedding venue is so close to my own home, so it was great to practically be working in my own backyard!

We started the day at the W Union Square. It’s a bright, modern hotel with brilliant light.
monique lhuillier candy dress
The second I saw the bride’s dress, I couldn’t help but smile. Jundai was married in the Monique Lhuillier Candy dress, which was the same dress I wore to my own wedding!
brooklyn botanical garden wedding pics
I love the light coming in from the window, and the way the bride’s delicate skirt flows into the shadows. Jundai is so graceful, and everything she does is elegant.
brooklyn botanical garden wedding details
One of my favorite details of the Monique Lhuillier Candy dress is the delicate grosgrain ribbon belt.
brooklyn botanical garden wedding picture
One of the sweetest things about documenting wedding days are the quiet moments. Not every “moment” has to be a huge laugh or a flood of tears. Sometimes it’s just a quiet breath, a simple smile, or a second of peace.
brooklyn botanical garden wedding photo
Jundai’s mother is just as kind and sweet as her daughter. I love this sweet moment between the two of them while Jundai was getting dressed.
brooklyn botanical garden wedding photos
Every wedding day is different. Every timeline allows for different amount of time with the bride alone, families, bride and groom together, and so forth. We had a glorious hour in the Brooklyn Botanical Garden for portraits of the bride alone, and the bride and groom together.
brooklyn botanical garden wedding first look
This is Jundai’s reaction to seeing Hong Ma for the first time. I’ve tried to write a caption for this image for a solid fifteen minutes, but what words are needed when the picture tells the whole story?

The joy and happiness that these two have together is really breathtaking.
brooklyn botanical garden wedding portraits
After the bride and groom saw each other for the first time, we spent about an hour in the Brooklyn Botanical Garden taking portraits of them together.
bride and groom at brooklyn botanical garden wedding
The staff at the Garden provided a golf cart for us to get around. This really helped us get to as many locations as possible! I especially loved the Rose Garden.
portraits at a brooklyn botanical garden wedding
A lot of potential clients ask me how I pose brides and grooms together. Will they feel awkward? Will they be forced into unnatural poses? I do my best to reassure them that my job is to document your relationship, and the “poses” are just gentle suggestions. My goal is to create pictures for you like this one, where you’re just alone together, interacting naturally.
brooklyn botanical garden wedding photographer
July weddings can be mild and lovely, or over a hundred degrees. The weather on this day was perfect, not too hot but just warm enough!
brooklyn botanical garden wedding photographers
The Brooklyn Botanical Garden is gorgeous at all times of year (the cherry blossoms are especially excellent), but I think there is something special about it in the summertime. I love how you feel like you’re in the middle of a secluded garden, when you’re really in the heart of Brooklyn.
brooklyn botanical garden wedding formals
The casual posing I employ with brides and grooms also carries over to portraits of the bridal party. Do I take pictures of everyone smiling directly at me? Absolutely! I also like to try and create a few images like this one, time permitting. I love how everyone is interacting!
brooklyn botanical garden wedding black and white
I try to be observant all day long. I am looking for all kinds of action and interaction. I caught the littlest ring bearer before the ceremony, being dragged off to the processional. I absolutely love his face!
brooklyn botanical garden wedding ceremony
The ceremony took place on the lawn of the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. One of my favorite parts about the ceremony was the processional. Everyone came from behind this gorgeous foliage to walk down the aisle. Isn’t it dramatic and lovely? The sun is even beaming down from the perfect direction!

Jundai smiled the entire way down the aisle. I love her flowers, and I love the sun streaming through her veil.

When Jundai hugged her father, the sun shone directly on her face. It was really glorious to see.

The ceremony was scheduled perfectly to coincide with the setting sun.

The ceremony included the parents of the bride and groom, which was really lovely.

I am always drawn to layers in photographs. I love how Jundai and her mother are a frame alone, but when you add the reaction of the officient, and Hong Ma with his mother, you have a richly layered final image.
brooklyn botanical garden wedding recessional
On their way back down the aisle, Hong Ma grabbed Jundai and dipped her. Her reaction was priceless, as were her other facial expressions throughout the day!

The last bits of sun shone on the recessional, and then it was twilight. The entire ceremony was timed to perfection!
brooklyn botanical garden wedding moments
After the ceremony, the bride and groom spent a few minutes with their bridal party. I love how sweetly Jundai is touching the face of her emotional bridesmaid. What a lovely moment. It was such an honor to be there to document it.
brooklyn botanical garden wedding flower girl
There are moments everywhere at weddings. Even a bit off the beaten path. The flower girl was all alone during cocktail hour, and I love her little solemn expression.
brooklyn botanical garden wedding tea ceremony
At the end of cocktail hour and before the reception, Jundai and Hong Ma held a brief tea ceremony with their parents.

After the tea ceremony was a quick hair and lipstick change for Jundai. Her hair is SO gorgeous down!

501 Union Wedding

I adored Courtney and Bryan long before the day of their 501 Union wedding.  From our very first exchange of emails to our first chats, I knew that I had to shoot this couple’s wedding!  Courtney and Bryan are both so bright, so vivacious, and so very funny.  They are kind to each other, extraordinarily loving to their family and friends, and so full of joy.  I loved photographing their engagement session on the High Line last year, and it was such an honor to document their 501 Union wedding this spring.

501 Union wedding
The dressing room at 501 Union has no windows. It’s small. It’s oddly shaped. It’s also gorgeous. We set up a lovely light, and made the most of this delightful space.
501 Union wedding bar
Courtney and Bryan even have a dog that matches the decor. How’s that for commitment to a theme? Their gorgeous black and white puppy matched the black and white decor, even down to his tiny black and white bow tie!

501 Union is an excellent Brooklyn wedding venue. It’s modern, welcoming, and full of brilliant bright light.
501 Union wedding bride's room
We started the day at the McCarren Hotel, documenting Bryan and his groomsmen. We then moved to 501 Union to capture the end of Courtney’s hair and makeup process. Jhenelle Hill from Prim & Perfect did an extraordinary job with Courtney’s wedding day look.

I love Courtney’s laugh SO MUCH. She is the sweetest soul, with the brightest smile.

Courtney gave each of her bridesmaids such deeply thoughtful gifts. Each gift was different, perfectly suiting the person receiving it.

Pronovias bolero
Courtney’s Pronovias gown was incredible, but the bolero that she added was simply jaw-dropping.

Courtney’s grandmother had the most wonderful reaction to seeing her granddaughter for the first time in her wedding gown.
501 Union wedding portraits
Family portraits are so very important, but I’m also always looking for those quiet moments between the formal, posed images.
Dog ringbearer
Bryan and Courtney’s dog made a fantastic appearance during the portraits. I love his fantastic ears and hilarious tongue.

The quiet moments before the beginning of a ceremony are some of my favorite moments on a wedding day. The anticipation is so high, and every moment so precious.

The groom had his rings with him earlier in the day, so I didn’t get ahold of them until just before the ceremony. I used the moss from one of the centerpieces as the setting for Bryan’s ring, and I love how this image incorporates the decor.
501 Union wedding ceremony
The space for ceremonies at 501 Union is really incredible. The roof opens up to the sky, giving you a great indoor/outdoor venue.
501 Union wedding ceremony location
Bryan and Courtney had a beautiful candle-lighting tradition during their ceremony. It was really peaceful, meaningful, and lovely.
501 Union wedding decorations
Cary Pereyra of The Little Glass Slipper did an amazing job with all of the florals. I especially loved Courtney’s bouquet and the fantastic birds’ nests on the chuppah.
Wedding ceremony at 501 Union
Despite threatening rain for days, there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. I was so glad that they were able to open the roof and let the sun in during the ceremony. I think the light is brilliant!
Bride and groom at a 501 Union wedding
I only had a few moments with Courtney and Bryan after the ceremony to create portraits of them together. I found an alley near a BBQ with brilliant light, and I love the results. It just goes to show that you really can make beautiful images anywhere!

No pun intended, but I LOVE this wedding cake. The detail was amazing – and all of the flowers are made of sugar. It was really a work of art.
Cafe Wha Band
After cocktail hour, it was time to dance! The Cafe Wha band was amazing. I especially loved the bride’s dance with her father.

The hora at a Jewish wedding is always – ALWAYS! – a source of great moments.

For the reception, Courtney removed her jeweled bolero and let her Pronovias gown stand on it’s own. I love the feathers on the bodice!

It’s always good to make sure your new spouse isn’t planning on smashing the cake in your face before you attempt to feed them!

Courtney and Bryan, thank you so much for entrusting me with your memories. It’s been a delight getting to know you both, and your wedding was truly incredible.  Special thanks to the tremendous Rebecca Shankman of Pink Bow Tie Events.  Just weeks from her due date, she was helping with decor, making sure the day was running smoothly, and handling the entire event with grace and ease.  I hope to get to work with you again, Rebecca!

Central Park Boathouse Wedding

I had been looking forward to Samantha and Adam’s Central Park Boathouse wedding since photographing their engagement session in Brooklyn last year.  Loeb Boathouse has long been one of my favorite locations for Manhattan weddings.  A beautiful landmark restaurant in Central Park,  the Boathouse is a wonderful choice if you’re looking for an iconic wedding venue with a uniquely Manhattan feel.  It’s also close to Bethesda Fountain and the Central Park Mall, which are two of my favorite places in New York for wedding day portraits.

We started the day at The Empire Hotel. The suite was gorgeous, and full of brilliant light. I had a few moments with the bride and groom’s rings before the day really got started, and it was nice to spend a bit of time documenting those precious details.

Samantha’s mother is absolutely lovely. I adore this moment where Samantha gave her mother an exceedingly thoughtful – and beautiful – gift.
central park boathouse wedding pics
Moments between brides and their mothers are so beautiful to document. I was so honored to have captured this sweet, fleeting moment for Samantha and her mom!

The light in The Empire Hotel was beautiful. However, it didn’t hold a candle to Samantha’s dress. There were two huge bows on the back of the dress that were sculpturally GORGEOUS.

Samantha’s sister is fantastic. She’s funny, sweet, and a total joy to be around. She even helped Samantha put on her shoes – how kind is that?

The Empire Hotel really does have beautiful light. I love this quick moment between Samantha and her mom, right before she left to see Adam for the first time.

Samantha’s grandmother gave her a beautiful heirloom ring that had passed from her to Samantha’s mother. Now that it was her wedding day, the ring belonged to Samantha.

Lincoln Center wedding pictures
Samantha and Adam opted to see each other before their ceremony. They saw each other for the first time in Lincoln Center. We had no idea that wedding photography was strictly prohibited in Lincoln Center. Great thanks to the security guard who let us stick around and allow this moment to unfold before kicking us out!

Samantha’s reaction to seeing Adam for the first time makes me smile every time I see it!
Lincoln Center wedding
New York is teeming with people. Usually it makes wedding images tough to create, because you’re always striving to crop out the tourists. In this image, I love how the people in the background add to the moment. Totally random strangers, just taking pictures of a bride and groom they don’t know – welcome to New York!
Petzval lens wedding
I love the swirly bokeh of the Petzval lens for my Nikon. It creates such a delightfully surreal background.
Double exposure wedding photo
I’m always looking for a way to show a familiar scene in a new way. I love this double exposure. All of my double exposures are created in camera, not in Photoshop, so they’re extra fun to put together!
central park boathouse wedding portraits
I realize that I don’t show many posed images here on my blog, focusing on moments and natural portraits. This has led people to ask me if I even take posed images – of course I do! I love to keep them light, easy, and beautifully quick!

The groom and groomsmen requested a photograph with Samantha, and the next thing I knew she was off the ground! I love the pop of black tuxes against the white dress shirts and Samantha’s brilliant white dress.

While documenting the family formal images, I am always on the lookout for sweetly emotional moments just like this one!
central park boathouse weddings
The boathouse does a great job of separating the reception space from the ceremony space. We only had a tiny space for Samantha and Adam to sign the ketubah, but we made it work! Someone held up the flashlight from an iPhone so they could see to sign, and I thought it made a great impromptu light!
central park boathouse wedding ceremony
A lot of wedding photographers love the kiss at the end of the ceremony. I do, too. But my favorite moments usually occur immediately after the kiss, when the bride and groom turn to face their family and friends. This image perfectly illustrates why I love that part of the ceremony so very much!

Hank Lane’s Marcus Reid band was INCREDIBLE. From the very first introduction of the bride and groom, they had the crowd on the dance floor until 2am!

Even after the first dance was over, and the crowd joined them on the floor, Samantha and Adam didn’t stop dancing together. I really, really loved that.

The look on the mother of the groom’s face is simply priceless. I love it when the parents are lifted on the chairs during the hora!
central park boathouse wedding tables
I often get asked how I can capture the action of the person giving the toast with the reaction of the crowd without a second shooter. My answer is simple : I just do. I’ve spent almost fifteen years training myself to see both action and reaction, and I LOVE this reaction image!

Samantha and Adam are exceptionally kind to each other. They’re such lovely, vibrant, warm, wonderful people. I can see why their family and friends said such wonderful things about them during their toasts!

Samantha and Adam, thank you so much for entrusting me with your memories.  It was a huge joy to spend the day with you both, your beautiful families, and your hilarious friends.  I hope you’re off having the best honeymoon EVER, and I can’t wait to share the rest of your images with you soon!

Congress Hall Wedding

I have always loved working at Congress Hall, and Tara and Tom’s wedding was no exception.  Since it opened in 1816, Congress Hall has been the premiere location for weddings, events, and vacations right in the heart of Cape May, New Jersey.  I love the proximity to the beach, the vibrant colors of the bride’s getting ready room, and the kindness of the hotel staff.  Despite the unseasonably crazy heat, the team at Congress Hall stayed cool and made sure that everyone was well cared for – and hydrated!

Before we began the getting ready images in Founder’s Hall, I took a few seconds alone to photograph the bride’s exquisite engagement ring.

Liberty Warehouse Wedding : Suzzane + Jonathan

Suzzane and Jonathan’s Liberty House wedding marked my first time working at this iconic Brooklyn wedding venue.  Situated on Pier 41 in the charming Brooklyn neighborhood of Red Hook, the Liberty Warehouse sits right on the water in the historic shipping yards.  Despite the prominent location, this ceremony and reception location feels remote and private.  I love the views of the New York Harbor and the unique face-front vantage point of the Statue of Liberty.  It was a delight to spend the day with Suzzane and Jonathan, their family, and their friends.  It was also a treat to work with my dear friend Adam Forgione of Pennylane Productions.  It’s wonderful to work with a video team who shares my creative style and results in a true collaboration!
