Nassau Inn Wedding

Nassau Inn Wedding

Who? : Freda + Da

What? : Preparations and tea ceremony at a Princeton hotel, ceremony at the University chapel, portraits on the college campus, and a sweet, small reception inside an inn.

Where?  The Nassau Inn, Princeton University

When? : March 2019

“Tingting and Andy are friends of mine and they spoke highly of you and your service. We would love to have you as our photographer for our wedding.”

On the contact form of my website there is a section to tell me who referred you to my business.  Da wrote the above, and it just goes to show that the best marketing is happy clients.  I’ve said that for years, I say that when teaching other wedding photographers, and it’s been a constant throughout the nearly two decades that I’ve been a wedding photographer.  Make your clients happy, and they’ll tell their friends.  It’s really that easy.  Tingting and Andy had an AMAZING wedding several years prior, and it is so heartwarming to know that they still remembered me, and that they’re still telling their friends about me!

Da and Freda were married on the kind of late-winter/early-spring day that makes you love this time of year.  It was cold, yes, but the light was brilliant and bright.  The Princeton campus was quiet, and we had the kind of timeline that wedding photographers dream about : ample time to create portraits, no rushing, an easy experience for the couple and their families, and space to breathe and enjoy the day.

From getting ready at the Nassau Inn to long walks across the college campus, everything unspooled and unfolded like a dream.  There was gorgeous light, a wonderful collaborative team, and a reception that ended with a shower of sparklers and a sweet kiss at the bottom of the steps.

“Simple.  Quiet.  Classic.”

When asked how they envisioned their wedding day, Da and Freda told me those three words.  And their day was just that : simple, quiet, and classic.  Full of love and sweetness, calm comfort and beauty.  It was an honor to document the day for them.

Ocean Club Bahamas Wedding

Ocean Club Bahamas Wedding

Who? : Jenny + James

What? : Rehearsal dinner, wedding, and reception at the Four Seasons resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas

Where?  The Ocean Club

When? : January 2019

I first met Jenny and James at Jenny’s sister’s Philadelphia wedding.  I was immediately besotted with Jenny, Meredith, their brother, their parents, and their entire family.  At once loving, tight-knit, warm and welcoming, they’re also funny, sweet, and know how to throw a spectacular party.  When Jenny’s amazing event planner Tracie Domino called me about Jenny’s destination wedding, I practically tripped over myself with my excitement to work with this amazing family again.

From the rehearsal dinner by the beach to dinner and dancing under a tent covered in fairy lights, the entire weekend was perfect.  I know that words on wedding photography blogs start to sound the same after awhile – everyone has amazing clients, everyone has amazing weekends, every venue is amazing.  But these people?  This weekend?  These families?  Amazing is the only word for it.  I can’t wait for the next wedding, the next party, and the next time I get to work with these spectacular human beings.  Jenny, James, Meredith, Meredith’s James, Andrew, Carol, Bob – you’re the best.  Always and forever.

Wedding at Philly’s Union League

Wedding at Philly’s Union League

Who? : Sophie + Vincent

What? : Preparations and reception at an iconic Philadelphia venue, ceremony at Christ Church

Where?  Philadelphia’s Union League

When? : December 2018

Sophie is a wedding photographer’s dream.  Sweet, soulful, and willing to do whatever it took for a great image.  Whether it was getting ready next to a window in the dark, sitting patiently with her wedding party for a dramatic group portrait, or perching on the Union League’s grand staircase for a solo shot, Sophie was all in, all day.  Sophie and Vincent are warm, loving humans with warm, loving families so it was no wonder that their day was warm and loving as well.  Winter weddings in the dark?  I’m there, every time.

Winter Wedding at Front and Palmer

Winter wedding at Front and Palmer

Who? : Samantha + Eric

What? : Preparations at the Hotel Monaco in Philadelphia, ceremony at Christ Church, portraits in Headhouse Square, and reception at a former Philly barrel factory.

Where?  Front and Palmer

When? : December 2018

All wedding photographers have favorite venues : it’s just a fact.  Some might love a space because of the sweeping lawns.  Some might be drawn to a particular venue’s swirling spiral staircase.  Some might love how the light plays across a patio at cocktail hour.  Me?  I’m most drawn to light, to the dramatic juxtaposition of shadow and highlight, to warmth, kindness, and more than a healthy sense of drama.

Front and Palmer is one of those venues.  Cozy, intimate, theatrical, unique – it is all of those things and so much more.  It also holds a huge place in my heart, since this is where my husband and I were married!

This whole winter wedding was pure Philadelphia through and through.  From their preparations at the iconic Hotel Monaco to the classic grandeur of Christ Church, nighttime portraits across from my favorite pizza place in the crisp cold winter air to the most charming of receptions, the whole day was Samantha and Eric through and through : just wonderful.

Wedding at Quantum Leap Winery

Wedding at Quantum Leap Winery

Who? : Kalen and Zachary

What? : Preparations in an AirBnB, first look at a nearby park, ceremony and reception at a winery.

Where?  Quantum Leap Winery, Winter Park, Florida

When? : December 2018

I fell in love with Susan’s work because it is pure art. Her creative eye and ability to capture the unexpected is unprecedented. We love her elegant, documentary-style photos and want her to feel free to get as artistic as she wants! We trust her fully and will be so proud and honored to hang her pictures on our walls and share them with friends, family, future children, potential employers, the checkout lady at Publix — Really just anyone we can.

As if I weren’t already enough in love with Kalen myself before she filled out my Wedding Day Worksheet, this paragraph above sealed the deal!

I first met Kalen and Zachary through email, as is often the case with destination clients.  However, we also got to meet – which is not often the case for destination clients.  Kalen and Zachary are both incredible performers at Universal Studios in Orlando, and I got to see them sing when I was there on vacation this past summer.  Seeing them in their element like that was electric; they’re dynamic talents with huge stage presences, and their love for what they do is so palpable.

I knew their wedding day was going to be uniquely, amazingly them…and it was.  From Kalen’s Broadway-themed playlist while she got ready to her sparkly makeup-kit-on-wheels-with-lights, they had me at the very beginning.  Add to that custom leather jackets, a first look near an alligator pond (we didn’t see alligators, thank goodness, Florida I’ve missed you)nighttime portraits lit by the headlights of Kalen’s dad’s vintage car, a first dance by a barbershop quartet, a sparkler exit from the ceremony to the reception, and one of the best bands I have EVER HEARD, the day was a heart explosion from start to finish.

Kalen and Zachary, you two are magic.  There is no other word for it.  I am deeply thankful from the bottom of my heart that you brought me to Florida to document your day.  And I hope you managed to get packed by the time your flight took off for Germany on Monday…

Alfond Inn Wedding

Alfond Inn Wedding

Who? : Amanda + Ben

What? : Destination wedding in Winter Park, Florida

Where?  The Alfond Inn

When? : December 2018

I don’t even know where to start with this wedding, so I’ll start back in 2007.  I was living in Tallahassee, Florida, and photographed the headshots for a bunch of juniors and senior theatre majors at FSU.  Years after that, I’m living in New York, and so are many of my past clients.  Those clients led me to Amanda, a FSU alumni herself.  I first encountered Amanda in Hello Dolly on Broadway, where she went on for a role she understudied (and she was amazing).  I first encountered Ben without realizing it, seeing him in Book of Mormon before I knew he was Amanda’s Ben.

Being hired to photograph this wedding was an actual dream come true. Everything about Amanda and Ben is just…yeah, it’s all excellent.  They’re crazily, insanely talented individuals.  They’re hard workers, passionate about their dreams and their craft, and true triple threats.  They’re adorably wonderfully gorgeous, just beautiful human beings inside and out.  They’re funny, ferociously love their family and friends, and love each other with a truth and depth that is just really, really freaking gorgeous to see.

And their wedding?  THEIR WEDDING.  We started the day at the Alfond Inn, with Amanda in her suite.  The rain was pouring down, streaking the windows and pattering on the pool outside.  Amanda got ready, Ben got ready.  They exchanged letters they had written each other.  (We all cried).  They prepared to see each other for the first time on a covered patio outside the Alfond – and the sun came out.  The rain stopped, the clouds parted, they saw each other (we all cried), and we took pictures outside.   The second we went back in, the clouds covered up and the rest of the day was moody and dreamy outside.

From their prep time at the Alfond before the ceremony, their sweet first look, the charm of their wedding vows, through to the gorgeous reception, the whole day was everything.  Choosing a favorite part is nearly impossible.  Was it Amanda and her childhood best friend tearing up when she put her mother’s necklace on as a bracelet?  Was it Ben, struggling to keep a straight face when reading Amanda’s letter to him, or the way his eyes actually lit up when he saw her come down the aisle?  Perhaps it was Amanda’s dad, who found a lost recording of Amanda’s late mother singing Wind Beneath My Wings (note : Amanda was in Hello Dolly with, yes, Bette Midler) and played it for the father/daughter dance?

Side note : I’ve never had to go to the bathroom and wash my face after a father/daughter dance before.  WE.  ALL.  CRIED.

Amanda and Ben, thank you.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.  Thank you for being so kind and open in front of my lens.  Thank you for treating me and my team like family.  Thank you for sharing your day, your love, and your hearts with me.  I am eternally grateful.  Now go lay on a beach – you deserve it!

Wedding at the Park Chateau

Wedding at the Park Chateau

Who? : Gabriella + James

What? : Preparations, first look, portraits, ceremony, and reception at a New Jersey wedding venue.

Where?  The Park Chateau, East Brunswick, New Jersey

When? : November 2018

Our vision is to capture the real moments of the day between us, and the people we love. We are all about capturing the love in the room and making sure we have memories of our loves ones from this day. While we do want to have the traditional posed photos (for posterity) what we really love are the special, intimate moments, the laughter, the smiles, the tears, the bad dance moves, the hugs, the kisses, the joy and pain and love of the day. However you capture that, we love in your photos. I think we are drawn to the intimacy of your images.

I first met Gabriella and James over a year ago, on the coldest of fall days in Asbury Park.  They’d hired me to take their engagement images, and we laughed our way along the boardwalk in the misty, freezing weather.  That would be a wonderful wedding to photograph I remember thinking.  I hope they hire me when they start those plans.

A bit later I heard from them again – they’d set a date, picked a venue, and were full steam ahead with the wedding plans.  On another cold day – this time with brilliant light – we got to work together again, this time when they became husband and wife!  What a beautiful day, what remarkable people, what a gorgeous venue.  Who says summer is the best wedding season?  I beg to differ.  Give me a crystal-clear cold winter wedding day anytime! (Especially if it’s with these two!)

Here are a few of my favorite images from their wedding:

The Park Chateau is, in a word, ridiculous.  (And for those of you who know me, you know that’s a compliment!)  The biggest getting-ready room has multiple makeup stations, a place to WASH YOUR HAIR, and a huge main room big enough to fit my entire apartment into.  And that light?  Don’t get me started! Cheers to any client brave enough to stand in front of an open door in freezing cold weather because the light is really great when I open the doors, are you okay with that? Gabriella got ready surrounded by her mother and the other amazing women in her life.  I love it when everyone comes together in those final moments of preparation to help out! James also got ready at the Park Chateau (images forthcoming from my second photographer!) and then waited nervously in the chapel to see Gabriella for the first time. It was COLD outside.  I know I’ve talked about how winter has been coming, but y’all, it’s here.  The freezing air took our breaths away, but Gabriella and James were still willing to hop outside for a few quick images by the pond! After that, it was time to go inside and get warm.  We stopped on the famous Park Chateau stairs for an image of Gabriella alone before beginning on our list of family and wedding party groupings. After the family and wedding party images we had a quick second to dart into the library and take a few images in front of the fireplace, a handful more portraits of the two of them together – and then it was time to warm up and freshen up for the ceremony.

The sweet sunset ceremony was followed by cocktail hour, and then off to the reception! After the first dance (which was freaking awesome) came some sweet, emotional toasts.  Then it was time to dance, dance, dance! We closed the night out with a few more images in the cold!  I am always so grateful to clients who are willing to brave the elements for a few more images!

When describing her hopes for their wedding day, Gabriella expressed her desired day to be “Warm.  Romantic.  Dramatic.  Joyful.   Sincere.”  The day was all of that and so, so much more.  It was a huge honor to be a part of the day, and to get to know these remarkable human beings just a bit better.  Congratulations, you two!

When? : March 2018

It takes a brave duo to plan a botanic garden wedding in the wintertime – especially with the winter that we’ve been having this year!  Anna and Max crafted a day that was them from start to finish, from getting ready in their own apartment to their deeply personal, meaningful ceremony.  They even braved the wintery cold for a few outdoor portraits before their ceremony!

Where? : The Madison Hotel, Morristown, New Jersey

When? : February 2018

I first met this remarkable groom at his sister’s wedding – and I swear it was only about a year ago.  It just goes to show that time moves in crazy ways, because his sister and her husband now have two children with one more on the way!  This wedding at the Madison Hotel brought together family and friends in one remarkable, snowy, cozy day.

It takes a special couple to brave possible inclement weather and have a winter wedding.  It takes an even more special couple to be willing to brave the sudden torrential downpour of snow for a few night portraits.  There is something so remarkable about starting your wedding ceremony with a bright sky and ending it with a flurry of puffy, sweet snowflakes.  Like this incredible duo, it was simply breathtaking.

Where? : Cescaphe Philadelphia

Winter weddings are always cause for planning, planning, and planning some more.  What if it snows?  What if bad weather makes it difficult for your guests to arrive?  What if it’s too cold to go outside for portraits?  What if?  What if?  Abby and Tommy planned perfectly, and got the best kind of winter wedding : meticulously designed, impeccably executed, and with the most flawless coating of snow on the ground for spectacular outdoor portraits.  It’s always a delight to collaborate with the team at Cescaphe Philadelphia wedding team, and it was so beautiful to see Abby and Tommy’s day come together.  From the deeply personal Amish wedding ceremony to the floral cannon showering the couple during their first dance, the emotion and design of the day were first rate.  It was an honor to witness the love this family has for each other, and an honor to create these images for such spectacular people!

What? : Rooftop ceremony and portraits in the park (and at Etsy!)

Where? : Top of the Rock, Brooklyn Bridge Park, the Brooklyn Bridge, and Etsy Headquarters.

When? : December 2017

Dhani and Adam planned their day just right.  After an intimate, wind-swept (quite literally, as my cameras were practically carried off of the peak of Top of the Rock!) rooftop ceremony, it was off to Brooklyn for an afternoon of amazing portraits.  Dhani and Adam were married with their daughter at their side, surrounded by loved ones.  What more can you ask for?  Perhaps the most perfect pink wedding dress and leather motorcycle jacket?  Perhaps a trip to the top of Etsy HQ in Dumbo for some rooftop portraits?  Perhaps a sunset on the Brooklyn Bridge?  A vintage taxi?  A gloriously beautiful couple so deeply in love?  Dhani and Adam’s wedding day was all that and so, so much more.  I was so honored to spend the day with this miraculous couple, and so grateful to how willingly they braved the chilly Brooklyn winter day for their images!

Wedding at Current Chelsea Piers

Who? : Janine + Robert

What? : Indoor church ceremony, outdoor winter portraits, and indoor modern ballroom reception

Where? : Current Chelsea Piers, Manhattan, New York

When? : November 2017

I am often asked by clients “What can I do to get the best wedding pictures possible?”  My answer might sound flippant, but it’s honest and true : “Be happy.”  That’s it – just be happy.  Happiness radiated off of Janine and Robert all day at their wedding at Current Chelsea Piers, from Janine getting ready at the magnificent Gramercy Park Hotel, to their gorgeous church ceremony, through to their joy-filled reception at Current.

Probably the most noticeable example of be happy happened during the portraits.  It was freezing – and not just kind of cold.  It was the first truly bone-numbing day of the 2017 winter season, with temperatures plummeting to an abrupt 26 that felt like 18.  Janine and Robert braved the outside for spectacular sunset pictures and gorgeous images on the cobblestone streets of the Meatpacking District.  They were happy.  And this wedding at Current Chelsea Piers was spectacular.

Whitby Castle Wedding

I had been worried about the weather for this Whitby Castle wedding for months.  After having their engagement session rained out three times, I think this couple was more than deserving of the unseasonably wonderful weather they received!  I was so glad to see that our “weather curse” didn’t follow them all the way until their wedding day!

Whitby Castle at the Rye Golf Club is a sprawling wedding venue in Rye, New York.  Modeled after England’s Whitby Abbey, Whitby Castle is a true oasis in Westchester County.  It has the unique feel of a manor home, while being just a short drive away from the city.

The bride and groom started their day at a nearby Westchester hotel before moving to a church for their ceremony.  After a receiving line and family portraits at the church, we moved to Whitby Castle for their cocktail hour and reception.  At one point the bride called the day her “perfect Pinterest wedding”, and she was right!  Not a single detail was left overlooked, with the bride tending to the look of the day with a beautifully personal touch.

Here is a slideshow of highlights from the day:

Here are some of my favorite images from their wedding:

Whitby Castle wedding cost
The bride wore a gorgeous Pronovias gown with a bolero. The bolero had long lace sleeves, and the entire top covered her strapless dress top. After the ceremony, she was able to remove the bolero and have a completely different look for her wedding reception!
Whitby Castle wedding pics
The couple requested that their first look take place on this staircase. I was thrilled to find the mirrored wall next to me, using it to create a reflection of this incredibly important moment.
Whitby Castle wedding reception
To do (or not do) a first look is something that many couples debate about. Do they want to see each other before they go down the aisle? This bride and groom decided on a first look so that they could get pictures taken in natural light. It can be tricky to work the schedule of a winter wedding around the sunset time, and for this reason the first look was a perfect decision for these two!

Weddings are full of many moments, both big and small. I love this quiet moment with the flower girl while she looks at the bride’s ring.
Whitby Castle wedding party
I love it when couples opt for striking getaways at the end of their wedding reception. The bride and groom chose to spend this moment with their bridal party, which resulted in a dramatic (and very personal!) moment.

Front and Palmer Wedding : Jennifer + Brian

Jennifer and Brian’s Front and Palmer wedding warmed my heart for dozens of different reasons. One : Awhile before the wedding Jennifer mentioned in passing that it would be great if it snowed on their wedding day. “Not a lot of snow” she stated “But maybe a little snow on the ground would be nice.” True to her wishes there was an incredible coating of snow on the ground in Washington Square Park for their portraits – and we had the park almost entirely to ourselves! Two : When Brian heard Jennifer coming down the hallway of the Westin to see him for the first time he started crying before she even reached him. Three : My husband and I were married at Front and Palmer less than a year ago and being back to photograph there was deliciously surreal.

Jennifer and Brian, THANK YOU. Thank you for braving the cold for your portraits, thank you for trusting me, thank you for letting me witness how much you love each other, and thank you for having me as a part of your day. It was already magical to be back in my own wedding venue but to be there with you was a true treat.

Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers Wedding : Rachel + Brian

The very first time I photographed a wedding at the Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers I was living in Florida.  It was 2006, and all I had been shooting for years had been beach weddings, beachside weddings, beachfront weddings – you get the idea!  Paula and Jordan brought me up to the city to shoot their wedding at the Lighthouse and I was immediately enamored with city shooting.  It was so bright, so busy, so hectic!  There were so many challenges and so many amazing places to take pictures!  I had no idea at the time that just two short years later I’d be moving to that city and the Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers would be a venue I’d shoot at time and time again.  This freezing cold, mid-winter, fast-paced event could not have been further from the Florida beaches, but I love shooting in this city that I now call home – even in the deepest winter months!

The bride and groom timed their ceremony perfectly so that the sunset streamed right through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The staff at Abigail Kirsh always do a great job recommending the perfect timing to their clients!

Not every bride would be willing to completely muss up her hair for a great portrait – but Rachel was. I love this image. You’d have no idea that it’s freezing and mid-winter here!
Ceremony at the Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers
The lighting inside of the Lighthouse was superb and I couldn’t resist stopping for one more portrait of the bride alone.

Reception at the Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers
The cake was so sweet, simple, and perfectly suited to the Atlas Florist’s event decor.
Wedding at Chelsea Piers
The Jay Prince band started off the night with a sweet first dance. Thank you so much, Rachel and Bryan, for braving the cold and wind for your wedding photographs. It was a delight!
