WPPI Print Competition
If you’re been perusing this gallery you’ve seen many images with the WPPI insignia on them. The WPPI 16x20 International Print Competition was the first competition that I ever entered and I’ve been hooked ever since. Held yearly in Las Vegas, this competition requires the maker to actually make a physical print of the image being entered. The print size total is 16x20, but you can add a mat around it and print a smaller image to be set within that mat - but I digress! The art of creating a physical print is becoming more and more lost with the increasing popularity of simply storing images to be viewed digitally on computers, Facebook, phones, etc. I work with a phenomenal printmaker in Australia to take my vision for the final output and turn it into a gorgeously flawless matted print. I love that this print competition actually celebrates the art of the print, and it’s one reason why I keep coming back year after year to have my images critiqued by the panel of judges at the WPPI convention. This image was entered in 2014 into the Photojournalism Division : Wedding Photojournalism category. I was disappointed in the score that it received but was still pleased to see the image hanging in the competition gallery later that week. Sometimes I feel that the judges really nail the precise score a print deserves and sometimes I feel that it’s a bit under or over-scored but either way, the competition forces me to work harder and push myself each year. I’m a competitive person and that little extra element of competition keeps me fresh and motivated! Keywords: East Norwich (8), long island (8), Pine Hollow Country Club (24), wppi (21).
