Pictures at the Bowery Hotel

Every wedding that I photograph is full of so many moments, small intimate details, and subtle beauty that it’s a joy to document. While so much focus is given on the interactions, the grand details, and the pomp and circumstance sometimes it’s easy to miss the small things right in front of your face. I am always careful, always observant, and always looking specifically for those small things. This image is an excellent example of one such thing. During the portrait session of the bride and groom at this 2013 Bowery Hotel wedding the wind on the Bowery roof deck was really strong. To keep her veil from whipping around in the strong New York wind the bride kept twirling the tulle around her hand. I saw the tulle, the strong backlighting, the glitter of her new wedding ring, and the delicacy of her hands contrasted with the brick of the roof deck railing and I knew I had a lovely photograph. I especially love how the long focal length of the Nikon 70-200mm at 200mm compresses the bride’s hand off of that brick background. The dark background also helps really make the backlighting stand out. It’s everything that I love in a sweet, simple image.
