About Highland, New York (and why I love it)

Nestled on the west bank of the Hudson River, the small town of Highland, New York, often remains an undiscovered jewel in Ulster County. Over the centuries, Highland has cultivated a rich tapestry of history, natural beauty, and a unique community spirit, laying the foundations for places like the renowned Liberty View Farm.

It's a gorgeous place to visit, and an even more beautiful place to get married.

Founded in 1853, Highland is surrounded by some of the most scenic landscapes in New York State. The town, with its serene views of the Hudson River and the breathtaking vistas of the Hudson Highlands, possesses an irresistible charm. This unique natural allure has not changed much since the time when the Lenni Lenape tribe was the primary inhabitant of this land.

Highland's history is a saga of constant evolution. Starting with Native American tribes, moving through Dutch and English colonization, up to modern times, each era has left its mark on the town. The Dutch influence can still be seen in some of the older buildings and streets named in their language.

In the Revolutionary War, this region played a significant role due to its strategic location. The nearby Hudson River was a vital waterway during the war, and the Highland area became a key location for the Continental Army. It was close to West Point, and the army used the Hudson River for transportation and communication.

Post the Revolutionary War era, Highland started to flourish as a hub for farming and commerce. Its location along the Hudson River made it a strategic trading point for goods and farm produce. In fact, many farmhouses from this era still stand, now often serving as historical landmarks.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the town's population grew considerably. The Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge, now known as the Walkway Over the Hudson, was constructed during this period. Once the world's longest pedestrian footbridge, it offers visitors breathtaking views of the Hudson River and the surrounding landscape.

Highland's prominence in the apple industry is also noteworthy. Thanks to its location within the Hudson Valley Apple Trail, Highland is home to several flourishing apple orchards that lend the local landscape a particular charm, especially during the fall. One of the most notable among them is the Liberty View Farm, which has become a favorite among locals and tourists alike.

From the humble beginnings of an agricultural community to the vibrant town it is today, Highland, New York, has maintained its essence while adapting to the changing times. Its blend of history, culture, nature, and agricultural wealth has made it an appealing destination for those seeking a quieter, more peaceful slice of the Hudson Valley.

Getting married in the Hudson Valley

There are few places on earth that encapsulate romance, serenity, and natural beauty quite like the Hudson Valley in New York State. Getting married in the Hudson Valley is more than just saying 'I do'—it's about embracing the exquisite natural backdrop, the historical richness, and the tranquil charm that this unique location offers.

One of the most captivating aspects of a Hudson Valley wedding is the region’s natural grandeur. Majestic mountains, dense forests, and rolling hills provide a dramatic and breathtaking backdrop for any ceremony. The Hudson River, meandering its way through the valley, adds an element of tranquility and timeless beauty. With each season bringing its own distinct palette—blossoming flowers in the spring, vibrant greens in the summer, fiery foliage in the fall, and serene white landscapes in the winter—there’s no bad time to have a Hudson Valley wedding.

The Hudson Valley is a community of artists, farmers, chefs, and nature lovers. The welcoming spirit of the people in the region contributes to the warm, intimate atmosphere of a Hudson Valley wedding. This sense of community, combined with a rich artistic and cultural scene, offers endless opportunities for unique, personalized wedding experiences.

In conclusion, the Hudson Valley is a place of stunning natural beauty, historic charm, and a deeply rooted sense of community. A wedding here is not just an event, but a celebration of love interwoven with the essence of nature, history, and culture. Whether it’s a grand affair at a historic mansion or a simple, intimate ceremony in a rustic barn, getting married in the Hudson Valley is a beautiful, unforgettable experience.

About Liberty View Farm

In Highland, New York, Liberty View Farm is a spectacular wedding venue. Located on a certified organic farm, this wedding venue offers a unique blend of natural beauty, history, and sustainability. Liberty View Farm offers a variety of services, including catering, venue rental, and farm tours. It is the perfect place for a romantic and eco-friendly wedding that will be remembered for years to come.

Having been in operation for more than two centuries, the farm has embraced organic practices, demonstrating a deep respect for nature. In addition to its farming methods, the venue embodies sustainability throughout, lending a feeling of authenticity and harmony. For instance, the farm has implemented solar energy to power the property and composting to reduce waste and build soil health.

You can create a beautiful blend of tradition and natural charm at Liberty View Farm. Imagine exchanging vows under a canopy of mature apple trees, or holding your reception in an elegantly rustic barn. For wedding photos with a panoramic view of the Hudson Valley, the farm's sprawling landscapes make the perfect backdrop.

Furthermore, the farm's location in Highland offers the dual advantage of being in a rural setting, yet still being accessible to guests traveling from larger cities. This makes the farm an ideal destination for city dwellers looking to experience a rural getaway without having to drive too far. Also, the farm's close proximity to nearby towns and attractions makes it an excellent choice for those looking for a convenient and enjoyable vacation. With its location in the historic Hudson Valley region, the experience is even more rich in cultural diversity.

But let's not forget the dozens of incredible photo locations that make Liberty View Farm such a hit with wedding photographers (and with me, especially!). For example, you can rent the Farmhouse right next door to get ready in. There are even areas for campers! The Farmhouse is gorgeous, with wonderful window light and ample space.

From there? Where do I even go from there? The barn? The arbor? The tent? The incredible gardens? The open glass greenhouse? The twenty acres of stunning property? The lovely owner Billiam and his excellent counterpart, Magic Cathy? It's a dream to photograph at Liberty View Farm but it's also a dream to just BE there amongst other wedding vendors who care so, so much about their clients and what they do.

In conclusion, whether you are planning an intimate celebration or a larger event, Liberty View Farm offers a unique, idyllic setting that celebrates nature, history, and the joy of your special day.
