Wave Hill Wedding Photography
Oftentimes I will hear photographers debating the merits of this new piece of glass versus that new piece of glass. One of the debates that comes up the most is the Nikon 85mm f/1.4 versus the 85mm f/1.8. When thinking about which lens would suit a photographer best I encourage them to decide whether that difference between f/1.8 and f/1.4 will really make a difference in the types of images they are trying to create. For me the 85mm f/1.4 is one of the most important lenses in my entire bag. I use it for images of the bride getting ready, portraits of the bride alone, documentary work during low-light wedding ceremonies, and even for available light images at wedding receptions. At this wedding at Wave Hill at the New York Public Gardens and Cultural Center there was lovely light at each of the reception tables. Some of the light was coming from candles on the tables but the rest was from the lighting designer at the event. When the quality of light is there, even if it’s a weak light source, I’ll often turn to my 85mm f/1.4 to capture that particular scene. In this image most of the light on the hands and the champagne glasses is coming from the candles on the table. This incredibly powerful Nikon lens performs superbly in low light and enabled me to document a moment that I might not have been able to capture with another lens.Location: W 249th St, Bronx, NY 10471.
