At this wonderful wedding at the Lake House Inn in Perkasie, Pennsylvania, the bride was surrounded by seven bridesmaid and two flower girls. I love getting to know my clients and seeing the relationships that they have with the women in their wedding party.
While on the wedding day we absolutely take traditional portraits of the wedding party standing and smiling directly at the camera, I always love to try and document the warm moments between the women when they’re naturally interacting. After taking their formal photograph, I simply instructed the women to "find each other incredibly funny."
Is this a slightly cheesy bit of direction? It absolutely is. The usual response to being asked to spontaneously laugh is that the bridal party actually spontaneously laughs!
I do not believe in staging the moment, I would much rather document naturally occurring moments, but I have no problems encouraging the setting of the scene so that the moment can take place. The relationships between these women and the genuine joy that they feel in each other's company is not fake. It is warm and loving and was an absolute pleasure to photograph.
