Creating Broadway portrait photography is a great love of mine. I have always adored the theatre, and working with performers brings me great personal and professional joy.
This session was my second Broadway portrait. Ali Stroker was a marvelous subject, and it was an honor document her.
Broadway is an amazing thing. It is incredible to me that shows are created and live for a brief time, even if the run is long. I remember my first real show, which was Chicago at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta.
I thought that seeing a "real" Broadway show was never going to happen, but I ended up visiting Manhattan for the first time when I was eighteen. I clearly remember seeing How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying with Matthew Broderick. I was blown away by the sets, the lights, and the entire performance. I didn’t know I wanted to be a photographer then, but the wheels were set in motion at that very first play.
Little did I know that I’d be back a few years later as an intern for the Roundabout Theatre Company. I soaked up theatre like crazy that summer, seeing anything and everything that I could. I was fascinated by the marketing and promotional photography that I saw for those shows. I was most taken with the portraits of the Broadway performers and how meticulously they were created. I started thinking "I’d love to do that one day."
It’s amazing that one day is now, and that I have been graced with the ability to photograph so many amazing performers. Broadway portrait photography is quickly becoming a part of my photography business. I love creating these portraits during the week and photorgaphing weddings on the weekend. It truly is the best of all worlds.
