NYC Dance Photographer

Being a NYC dance photographer is the culmination of a lifelong love of theatre and dance. I also realize how hard it is for potential clients to find the right NYC dance photographer to work with on their images. I wanted to take some time to answer one of the of biggest questions that I get asked often, and hopefully it will demystify the dance photography session for you!

Are the dance sessions on location, or in the studio?

This is a great question. While most of my NYC dance photography is done in my Industry City, Sunset Park, Brooklyn studio, I do have options for outdoor sessions.

Popular outdoor locations include Central Park, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Brooklyn Promenade, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Prospect Park, Bethesda Terrace, and the HighLine Park.

I love shooting indoors because we can control our lighting and background. It’s also easier to isolate you in the portraits when we don’t have to worry about street and tourist foot traffic the city! It’s also easier to change makeup and hair looks, as well as outfits, if you’re in the studio. It’s hard to find convenient places to do a makeup change in the city. Same with an outfit change.

If you have any questions about where you’d like to take your NYC dance photographs, just contact the studio and we can help you out!

Why are studio sessions a good choice?

This image is a great example of why a studio session is great for dance and lifestyle images.

At this particular dance session, we spent two hours shooting, starting with a simple look of a leotard, no tights, and bare feet.

Towards the end of the session, Ariana changed into a more street-style look. I love how this look shows off her dance style, while still evoking a more contemporary feel. Ariana has an amazing stage presence, so I didn’t choreograph her movements.

I like to let dancers explore their own movement in front of the camera. I only step in if I need the dancers to repeat a movement, or to try something new because they might be blocking the light or not showing off their strength and skill in the best ways possible.

What if I'm not sure where I want my photo shoot to take place?

That's absolutely fine!

Drop us an email or give us a call, and we can chat. I'd love to learn more about what you want to accomplish with your session, and then I can offer up some suggestion locations based on your needs.

I hope to hear from you soon!
