NYC High School Senior Photographer

If you're looking for a NYC high school senior photographer, chances are that you're looking for unique, remarkable senior images to commemorate this time in your life and this amazing city.

Whether you're looking to capture the vibrancy of New York or a quiet, simple studio session, I'd love to talk to you about your NYC high school senior photography needs.

What is high school senior photography?

When I was a high school senior, my "senior portraits" were pretty standard.

I showed up for the session at the time the school arranged for me, since the senior photographer was hired by the school to complete these sessions.

Once at the session, I did my own hair and makeup. I draped an awkward black cloth around my shoulders, and sat on a couple of oddly stacked apple boxes. I leaned on a velvet-draped stack of boxes, and smiled a smile that looked nothing like me.

Click.

That was my high school senior portrait.

If I was feeling extra adventurous, I could pay for two additional "looks." I got to change my outfit two more times, and stand in front of a variety of simple colored backdrops. We never left the shooting room.

The whole experience was done in less than forty-five minutes.

High school senior photography is not like that at all anymore! Gone are the tired backdrops, the boring poses. Now, these shoots are a bit more like fashion shoots. Multiple locations, multiple backgrounds, professional hair and make up - the sky is really the limit when it comes to these senior sessions.

While most schools still require any senior who wants a picture in the yearbook to be done by the official school photographer, most families are opting for additional sessions outside of the school. These sessions really highlight the personality of the senior, and their interests at such a pivotal time in their lives.

Where to take high school senior pictures in New York City

Many of the amazing locations that I love to take wedding day portraits in NYC and Brooklyn can double for incredible locations for high school senior photography.

I highly recommend that you take a look at my New York portrait locations for weddings, which you can find here!

I love to start high school senior sessions in my studio in Brooklyn. This gives us a great chance to get some lovely, simple images (as pictured here).

My studio is also where you'll have your hair and makeup done, if you've opted to add that onto your senior photography package.

We can shoot with light, airy white backgrounds in my studio. We can also shoot with dark black backgrounds. I have a wonderful weathered gray wall that makes for a great backdrop for my high school senior sessions.

There are some great locations near my studio, which can include:

  • Graffiti walls
  • Corrugated metal doors
  • Long, industrial cement hallways
  • Courtyards full of greenery
  • Industrial metal stairs
  • ...and so much more

If a studio isn't what you're looking for, we have many, many other options.

You can get your hair, makeup, and styling (as needed) done at home, or in a local hotel. We can shoot in dozens, if not hundreds, of locations including:

  • Fort Tryon Park
  • New York Public Library
  • Bryant Park
  • Times Square - especially great if you're a Broadway fan! Imaging getting your senior pictures taken outside of your favorite Broadway show?
  • Rockefeller Center
  • Top of the Rock
  • The Flatiron Building
  • The High Line
  • Union Square
  • On the streets of Greenwich Village
  • Washington Square
  • Battery Park
  • Central Park
  • Bethesda Fountain and Bethesda Terrace
  • Brooklyn Bridge
  • Brooklyn Bridge Park
  • DUMBO
  • Liberty State Park

That's just a few of the many location that we could discuss for your senior portraits. If you're not sure where you'd like to start, let's answer a few questions first!

  1. What are your hobbies? Are you a dancer, a theatre student, an athlete, a future politician, a runner, a fashion designer, an author? What do you love to do in your spare time? List out your favorite hobbies and your dreams for the future, and we'll find locations that fit that theme!
  2. What do you love about NYC? Is it the people and the atmosphere of a crowded city? Is it the quiet solitude of Fort Tryon Park or Prospect Park? The modern buildings? The old-world architecture? Establishing what draws you to the city will help you choose a location for your senior pictures.

As a resident of NYC for nearly a decade, I'm well versed in the many locations that are beautiful for portraits in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, New Jersey, and beyond. I'd be thrilled to chat with you and help you find memorable, wonderful locations for your personalized senior portraits.

What do I wear for my senior pictures?

I well remember stressing over what to wear for my senior photos. Besides the cheap black drape that was provided for my "official" picture, I recall making some very poor decisions when it comes to the rest of my attire!

(No, I'm not showing you my senior pictures. Sorry!)

The first place to start with choosing your outfit for your senior pictures is to answer this one simple questions:

What do you like to wear?

It really is that simple. Do you feel most like yourself in yoga pants and a hoodie? Do you like a three piece suit? Your prom dress? A tutu? Your football jersey?

Whatever it is, I want to know about it. I want to help you plan a few outfits that feel the most you that they possibly can. I want you to look back on these images later and remember what it was like to be you, at this point in your life, favorite ratty hoodie and all.

I don't like having my picture taken. What do I do to prepare for my session?

I can understand this. I don't love having my picture taken either! However, I understand how important certain pivotal times in my life are.

I understand how much preserving these moments in time will mean to me and my family later, so I grit my teeth and hop in front of the camera!

I promise that your comfort in front of my lens is extraordinarily important to me. I will do everything that I can to make sure that this session is an enjoyable one, and not something that you should dread!

If you have any concerns or want to talk about this, I'd love to hear from you. I know that being photographed isn't always a favorite thing of many people, and if I can do anything to put you at ease, give me a call or drop me an email!

What do high school senior portraits in NYC cost?

As I'm sure you're finding out as you do your research for a senior photographer in NYC, every photographer is priced differently.

Some senior photographers charge a higher investment fee up front, and include prints, the digital files, and/or other items in their "collection" or shoot fee.

Some senior photographers charge a lower "sitting fee", but that fee doesn't come with any prints, digital files, or additional items. With a structure like this, the clients often come back after the session to view the images and place their print, digital file, and product order at the reveal or sales session.

If you'd like to receive my pricing and information about my senior session sitting fees, products, and more, just drop me a line!
