One of my favorite traditions at a Jewish wedding is the hora. The hora (or "horah") is a circle dance typically performed to Hava Nagilah. I love the wild exuberance of the dance and I especially love the expressions on the bride and groom when they are raised in the air on the chairs and the expressions of the brave souls lifting the chairs! It’s usually one of the times at a wedding reception when the majority of guests are on the dance floor so it’s a great opportunity to take photographs of their interaction. During the hora I am typically giving most of my focus to the bride and groom, their parents, and their family members. Some horas feature only the newly married couple up on the chairs but others raise the mothers and fathers of the bride and groom as well. Sometimes even their siblings go up in the chairs! If I am ever able to photograph this dance from another angle than on the dance floor I will always take that opportunity. During this wedding reception at Baltimore’s Pazo Restaurant I noticed a balcony above the restaurant floor. After taking many shots from out on the dance floor I ran up the balcony steps and was able to shoot down into the crowd. My assistant stood to the edge of the dance floor and illuminated the bride and groom with our off-camera flash to give the image depth and dimension. By lighting the couple this way I was able to have that be the brightest focal point in the image, leading the viewer’s eye directly to their faces. I chose the 70-200mm Nikon lens when making this image so that I could really zoom in on the action and fill the frame with the bride and groom.
