New York Botanical Gardens Wedding

New York Botanical Gardens Wedding

Who? : Leslie + Justin

Where?  Stone Mill at the NYBG

When? : June 2019

What can I say about a couple so wonderful?  And how can I describe our weird, long road that led to Leslie and Justin’s day?  I met Leslie back in 2007-ish when she was a student at FSU and I was in my first new studio in Tallahassee, Florida.  We were both young, and early in careers that would eventually lead us both to New York and back to each other.  I photographed Leslie here in New York onstage, worked with her and Justin at Fort Tryon Park for their engagement images, and have now photographed their wedding.

It’s crazy how the world works.  I had no idea that these sweet, tiny babies (okay, mature teenagers) from FSU would still be a presence in my life over a decade later.  Shayla and I work often together at weddings, on events for The Wedding School, and she’s evolved into a brilliant production manager, filmmaker, entrepreneur, and Jedi minister destined to be besties with Lance Bass (it’s a long story).  Justin Bowen has worked on Broadway and is now exploring his almost hilariously enormous talent as a true artist in the field of hair design (there is no other word for it, he’s an artist).  Nick has emerged as one of the top rising makeup artists in the NYC area, another genius artist destined for stardom.  Leslie has been in almost too many Broadway shows to count, and her presence onstage is as dazzling as her ferociously beautiful voice and gorgeous, gorgeous dance talent.  Michael, Hardy, and so many more – you light up the world, and my life is better with you all in it.

Leslie and Justin had the kind of day you can only dream of.  Brilliant sunlight, the best of friends who have become your family, family that warms the heart, a stunning outdoor venue, and so much tears and laughter.  My love for these two has grown my heart a couple of sizes, and I hope the sweetness that they have together shines through in the photography of their day.

Stonover Farm Wedding

Stonover Farm Wedding

Who? : Suzanna + Pat

Where?  Stonover Farm, Lenox, Massachusetts

When? : June 2019

As wedding photographers, we write a lot.  We write instagram captions, we write blogs, we write information for our websites.  We work hard to put words to paper (or screen) to describe the incredible humans that come in and out of our lives.  We look for new words to describe how people look at each other – how do you do that when every wedding is different, and every couple truly is special?  How do you describe the perfect tapestry that is the way two unique individuals love each other?  We write and rewrite, we use our images to illustrate, and we can only hope that the love that we feel for our clients can be received and understood.

Suz and Pat, though?  These two have broken me.   I like to think I’m a good writer, I like to think I can describe with words what I feel and see.  But…I got nothing today, y’all.  All I have is eyes that keep filling up with tears when I think of their ceremony, ears still ringing from the sounds of Pat’s family’s voices, and a huge heart that can’t contain all of the crazy feelings from their day.  For once, I have NO WORDS.  Just pictures.  And a lot of love for two incredible people who are really, honestly, that much better together.

Wedding at Whitby Castle

Wedding at Whitby Castle

Who? : Melissa + Matt

Where?  Whitby Castle, Rye, New York

When? : June 2019

When asked how they wanted their wedding to feel, Melissa and Matt told me “whimsical, romantic, meaningful.”  And their day was just that.  After a winter of cold, rainy, dark days it was a gorgeous, unusually cool summer day the day they got married.  Under the brightest of blue skies, Melissa and Matt said their vows surrounded by family, friends, and the sweet memories of those who were no longer with them.

It’s really impossible to convey the magic of Melissa and Matt without sounding like I’m exaggerating.  They’re kind.  They’re wildly funny.  They are exquisitely gentle with each other and honestly delight in simply being together.  They’re warm.  They’re witty.  They’re gorgeous inside and out.  To be a part of their day is to be one step closer to the sun : wrapped up in all that makes them the wonderful, true people that they are.  It was an honor to document their day, and an honor to know them both.

St. Regis Wedding

St. Regis Wedding

Who? : Victoria + Peter

What? : Preparations and ceremony in Rumson, New Jersey.  Portraits in Central Park.  Reception at the St. Regis

Where?  The St. Regis NYC

When? : June 2019

8:30am photography start.  10:30 photography end time.  From the sweetest shore town to the center of Manhattan, this day was a ride from start to finish.  At the center of it were Victoria and Peter, a couple so dynamic and charming that it almost defies description.  From Victoria’s distinctive laugh (that never failed to make me laugh) to Peter’s charm, their incomprehensibly kind and fantastic wedding party to their warm, welcoming families – well, this was simply a great, great day.

I’m often asked what it takes to get great wedding photography.  Is it how you pose?  Should you wear a particular dress style, color, pocket square?  What if you won’t know what to do with your hands?  Should you look at me?  Should you learn to ignore me?  What I say in response is no, no, none of that matters.  What matters is that you’re happy.  That the person you’re marrying fills you with a heart-bursting joy.  That you’re willing to let that joy explode out of your face.  Just be happy.  Be happy, and your pictures will be perfect.

Victoria and Peter, heres to your inspiring happiness.  May it light your way always.  Thank you for everything.

Wedding at the Foundry

Wedding at the Foundry

Who? : Ashley + Alexandros

What? : Preparations, first look, portraits, ceremony, and reception at a restored 19th century Long Island City building

Where?  The Foundry

When? : May 2019

“THE FOUNDRY INTERIOR BOASTS 3,000+ SQUARE FEET OF RAW SPACE WITH A LUSH OUTDOOR COURTYARD, ROOFTOP TERRACE WITH VIEWS OF THE MANHATTAN SKYLINE, INDOOR GREENHOUSE AND FULLY EQUIPPED INDUSTRIAL KITCHEN.”  When I read this on the Foundry’s website, I had to press pause for a second.  Three thousand square feet?  Raw space?  An outdoor courtyard? A rooftop?  In Long Island City?  WHAT WAS THIS PLACE?

Turns out, it’s the Foundry, and it’s everything you could possibly want – and more.  From the skylights in the getting-ready suites to the huge private courtyard, this wedding venue is a perfect find for couples looking for a unique-but-charming place to hold their wedding.  As a photographer?  Especially one who loves quirky spaces, great light, and greenery?  It’s a dream come true.

Also a dream come true?  Ashley and Alexandros.  They’re funny, incredibly sweet, witty, lovers of family and friends alike, and they know how to throw a warm, welcoming event that brings everyone together under the stars and sky to celebrate.  You two, it was an honor to celebrate with you and to document your day.

Wedding at Pleasantdale Chateau

Wedding at Pleasantdale Chateau

Who? : Rachel + Joseph

What? : Preparations, portraits, and reception at a chateau in West Orange, New Jersey.  Ceremony at a nearby church.

Where?  Pleasantdale Chateau

When? : April 2019

Springtime is a tricky time of year to get married.  You might find yourself with a brilliantly bright day, sunlight streaming through trees, birds chirping, and a new warmth making the day shine.  You also have a chance of living out that saying of April showers bring May flowers.  Let’s be honest, while we love the idea of a flowery May, no one wants their April wedding to be a washout of rain and wind!

When I talked to Rachel the week of their wedding, we talked about how we had a 100% chance of rain on their day.  We discussed all of the amazing indoor places that Pleasantdale has to offer for rainy-day wedding portraits – The greenhouse!  That pool! – but I knew her heart was really set on some outdoor images.  Luck was with us, and the rain stopped long enough for us to create some gorgeous images on the foggy, dreamy grounds of the chateau.

Rachel and Joseph, thank you.  Thank you for darting out into the fog with me, mist in your hair and wet grounds underfoot.  Thank you for laughing with me, trusting me with your memories, and allowing me to spend such an important day with you.  Thank you, thank you.

What? : Preparations in a hotel and an AirBnB in Philadelphia, ceremony at a church, portraits in the park, and a reception in the Loews Hotel Ballroom

Where?   The Loews Hotel Philadelphia

When? : April 2019

The bold documentary style has drawn us both in. We like the creative and artful touches (fades, bokeh in lighting, mirroring and strong angles are very nice). We are both drawn to the colorful/psychedelic styles and would love to capture this if possible.

Bold documentary style?  Creative touches?  Mirroring?  Strong angles?   Colorful style?  When I read this note from Alexa and Ryan in regards to their wedding photography I knew I was all in – as if I wasn’t already.  Alexa and Ryan are the sort of people that bring the sun with them wherever they go, from the incredibly sweet way they are with each other to the way they laugh and forge bravely into some of the craziest Philadelphia wind I’ve ever experienced.

From the wind sweeping them through a shower of rose petals down the steps of their church to crawling under scaffolding in the pitch dark for a breathtaking rooftop view of the city, Alexa and Ryan are the kind of clients that wedding photographers dream about : bold, creative, artful, and strong.  They themselves are colorful and extraordinary, so it’s no surprise that they wanted that reflected in their wedding images.

What a dream, what a windy dreamy dream their day was.

What? : Preparations at home in Staten Island, ceremony at a church on Staten Island, portraits and reception at a hall in River Vale, New Jersey

Where?  The Estate at Florentine Gardens

When? : April 2019

Spring weddings are incredible.  We get to see the sun, which we’ve been missing for months.  The days are longer, sweeter, lazier.  Timelines have room to breathe, because we’re not rushing against an early setting sun.  Deanna and Francis had just one of those days.  Gorgeous weather, a sweetly emotional church ceremony,  a delightful amount of time to create portraits in between the ceremony and reception, and two of the most wonderful people you’ll ever meet committing their lives and futures to each other.

Deanna and Francis have a special kind of magic.  They’re gentle to each other, make each other laugh, and despite disagreeing about the excellence (or lack thereof) of ABBA-based musicals, they’re a perfect fit.  It was no surprise that their day was also a perfect fit for the two of them, balancing sweetness with humor, a gorgeously grand venue with an intimate, family feeling.  Watching a couple like this become family is one of the great joys of my job, and being there to document it?  Indescribable.

Nassau Inn Wedding

Nassau Inn Wedding

Who? : Freda + Da

What? : Preparations and tea ceremony at a Princeton hotel, ceremony at the University chapel, portraits on the college campus, and a sweet, small reception inside an inn.

Where?  The Nassau Inn, Princeton University

When? : March 2019

“Tingting and Andy are friends of mine and they spoke highly of you and your service. We would love to have you as our photographer for our wedding.”

On the contact form of my website there is a section to tell me who referred you to my business.  Da wrote the above, and it just goes to show that the best marketing is happy clients.  I’ve said that for years, I say that when teaching other wedding photographers, and it’s been a constant throughout the nearly two decades that I’ve been a wedding photographer.  Make your clients happy, and they’ll tell their friends.  It’s really that easy.  Tingting and Andy had an AMAZING wedding several years prior, and it is so heartwarming to know that they still remembered me, and that they’re still telling their friends about me!

Da and Freda were married on the kind of late-winter/early-spring day that makes you love this time of year.  It was cold, yes, but the light was brilliant and bright.  The Princeton campus was quiet, and we had the kind of timeline that wedding photographers dream about : ample time to create portraits, no rushing, an easy experience for the couple and their families, and space to breathe and enjoy the day.

From getting ready at the Nassau Inn to long walks across the college campus, everything unspooled and unfolded like a dream.  There was gorgeous light, a wonderful collaborative team, and a reception that ended with a shower of sparklers and a sweet kiss at the bottom of the steps.

“Simple.  Quiet.  Classic.”

When asked how they envisioned their wedding day, Da and Freda told me those three words.  And their day was just that : simple, quiet, and classic.  Full of love and sweetness, calm comfort and beauty.  It was an honor to document the day for them.

Wedding + Vow Renewal at the Vizcaya

Who? : Christine + Jared

What? : Wedding in Miami in 2009, vow renewal at the same venue in 2019

Where?  Vizcaya Museum and Gardens

When? : March 2009 and March 2019

Talk about full circle.  I met Christine and Jared for the first time way before their 2009 Miami wedding – we were all living in Tallahassee, Florida, and I’d been commissioned to photograph their engagement session.  I still remember walking around downtown Tallahassee (remember Gallie Alley, you two?) as vividly as I remember traveling to Miami for their wedding.  Since 2009, I’ve photographed many other things for this remarkable couple as they have since added three hilarious, wonderful children to their family.

Christine and Jared are, simply put, tremendous people.  Individually they are hilarious, warm, welcoming, razor-sharp smart, charming, gorgeous, and kind. Together?  They’re a supernova of sunshine.  It was a ferociously huge honor to travel back to Vizcaya for their vow renewal on their tenth anniversary to create some more images, this time with their children.

See you back in Miami in 2029?  I’m there if you’re there.

Ocean Club Bahamas Wedding

Ocean Club Bahamas Wedding

Who? : Jenny + James

What? : Rehearsal dinner, wedding, and reception at the Four Seasons resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas

Where?  The Ocean Club

When? : January 2019

I first met Jenny and James at Jenny’s sister’s Philadelphia wedding.  I was immediately besotted with Jenny, Meredith, their brother, their parents, and their entire family.  At once loving, tight-knit, warm and welcoming, they’re also funny, sweet, and know how to throw a spectacular party.  When Jenny’s amazing event planner Tracie Domino called me about Jenny’s destination wedding, I practically tripped over myself with my excitement to work with this amazing family again.

From the rehearsal dinner by the beach to dinner and dancing under a tent covered in fairy lights, the entire weekend was perfect.  I know that words on wedding photography blogs start to sound the same after awhile – everyone has amazing clients, everyone has amazing weekends, every venue is amazing.  But these people?  This weekend?  These families?  Amazing is the only word for it.  I can’t wait for the next wedding, the next party, and the next time I get to work with these spectacular human beings.  Jenny, James, Meredith, Meredith’s James, Andrew, Carol, Bob – you’re the best.  Always and forever.

Wedding at Philly’s Union League

Wedding at Philly’s Union League

Who? : Sophie + Vincent

What? : Preparations and reception at an iconic Philadelphia venue, ceremony at Christ Church

Where?  Philadelphia’s Union League

When? : December 2018

Sophie is a wedding photographer’s dream.  Sweet, soulful, and willing to do whatever it took for a great image.  Whether it was getting ready next to a window in the dark, sitting patiently with her wedding party for a dramatic group portrait, or perching on the Union League’s grand staircase for a solo shot, Sophie was all in, all day.  Sophie and Vincent are warm, loving humans with warm, loving families so it was no wonder that their day was warm and loving as well.  Winter weddings in the dark?  I’m there, every time.

Winter wedding at Front and Palmer

Who? : Samantha + Eric

What? : Preparations at the Hotel Monaco in Philadelphia, ceremony at Christ Church, portraits in Headhouse Square, and reception at a former Philly barrel factory.

Where?  Front and Palmer

When? : December 2018

All wedding photographers have favorite venues : it’s just a fact.  Some might love a space because of the sweeping lawns.  Some might be drawn to a particular venue’s swirling spiral staircase.  Some might love how the light plays across a patio at cocktail hour.  Me?  I’m most drawn to light, to the dramatic juxtaposition of shadow and highlight, to warmth, kindness, and more than a healthy sense of drama.

Front and Palmer is one of those venues.  Cozy, intimate, theatrical, unique – it is all of those things and so much more.  It also holds a huge place in my heart, since this is where my husband and I were married!

This whole winter wedding was pure Philadelphia through and through.  From their preparations at the iconic Hotel Monaco to the classic grandeur of Christ Church, nighttime portraits across from my favorite pizza place in the crisp cold winter air to the most charming of receptions, the whole day was Samantha and Eric through and through : just wonderful.

Wedding at Quantum Leap Winery

Wedding at Quantum Leap Winery

Who? : Kalen and Zachary

What? : Preparations in an AirBnB, first look at a nearby park, ceremony and reception at a winery.

Where?  Quantum Leap Winery, Winter Park, Florida

When? : December 2018

I fell in love with Susan’s work because it is pure art. Her creative eye and ability to capture the unexpected is unprecedented. We love her elegant, documentary-style photos and want her to feel free to get as artistic as she wants! We trust her fully and will be so proud and honored to hang her pictures on our walls and share them with friends, family, future children, potential employers, the checkout lady at Publix — Really just anyone we can.

As if I weren’t already enough in love with Kalen myself before she filled out my Wedding Day Worksheet, this paragraph above sealed the deal!

I first met Kalen and Zachary through email, as is often the case with destination clients.  However, we also got to meet – which is not often the case for destination clients.  Kalen and Zachary are both incredible performers at Universal Studios in Orlando, and I got to see them sing when I was there on vacation this past summer.  Seeing them in their element like that was electric; they’re dynamic talents with huge stage presences, and their love for what they do is so palpable.

I knew their wedding day was going to be uniquely, amazingly them…and it was.  From Kalen’s Broadway-themed playlist while she got ready to her sparkly makeup-kit-on-wheels-with-lights, they had me at the very beginning.  Add to that custom leather jackets, a first look near an alligator pond (we didn’t see alligators, thank goodness, Florida I’ve missed you)nighttime portraits lit by the headlights of Kalen’s dad’s vintage car, a first dance by a barbershop quartet, a sparkler exit from the ceremony to the reception, and one of the best bands I have EVER HEARD, the day was a heart explosion from start to finish.

Kalen and Zachary, you two are magic.  There is no other word for it.  I am deeply thankful from the bottom of my heart that you brought me to Florida to document your day.  And I hope you managed to get packed by the time your flight took off for Germany on Monday…

Alfond Inn Wedding

Alfond Inn Wedding

Who? : Amanda + Ben

What? : Destination wedding in Winter Park, Florida

Where?  The Alfond Inn

When? : December 2018

I don’t even know where to start with this wedding, so I’ll start back in 2007.  I was living in Tallahassee, Florida, and photographed the headshots for a bunch of juniors and senior theatre majors at FSU.  Years after that, I’m living in New York, and so are many of my past clients.  Those clients led me to Amanda, a FSU alumni herself.  I first encountered Amanda in Hello Dolly on Broadway, where she went on for a role she understudied (and she was amazing).  I first encountered Ben without realizing it, seeing him in Book of Mormon before I knew he was Amanda’s Ben.

Being hired to photograph this wedding was an actual dream come true. Everything about Amanda and Ben is just…yeah, it’s all excellent.  They’re crazily, insanely talented individuals.  They’re hard workers, passionate about their dreams and their craft, and true triple threats.  They’re adorably wonderfully gorgeous, just beautiful human beings inside and out.  They’re funny, ferociously love their family and friends, and love each other with a truth and depth that is just really, really freaking gorgeous to see.

And their wedding?  THEIR WEDDING.  We started the day at the Alfond Inn, with Amanda in her suite.  The rain was pouring down, streaking the windows and pattering on the pool outside.  Amanda got ready, Ben got ready.  They exchanged letters they had written each other.  (We all cried).  They prepared to see each other for the first time on a covered patio outside the Alfond – and the sun came out.  The rain stopped, the clouds parted, they saw each other (we all cried), and we took pictures outside.   The second we went back in, the clouds covered up and the rest of the day was moody and dreamy outside.

From their prep time at the Alfond before the ceremony, their sweet first look, the charm of their wedding vows, through to the gorgeous reception, the whole day was everything.  Choosing a favorite part is nearly impossible.  Was it Amanda and her childhood best friend tearing up when she put her mother’s necklace on as a bracelet?  Was it Ben, struggling to keep a straight face when reading Amanda’s letter to him, or the way his eyes actually lit up when he saw her come down the aisle?  Perhaps it was Amanda’s dad, who found a lost recording of Amanda’s late mother singing Wind Beneath My Wings (note : Amanda was in Hello Dolly with, yes, Bette Midler) and played it for the father/daughter dance?

Side note : I’ve never had to go to the bathroom and wash my face after a father/daughter dance before.  WE.  ALL.  CRIED.

Amanda and Ben, thank you.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.  Thank you for being so kind and open in front of my lens.  Thank you for treating me and my team like family.  Thank you for sharing your day, your love, and your hearts with me.  I am eternally grateful.  Now go lay on a beach – you deserve it!

Wedding at the Park Chateau

Wedding at the Park Chateau

Who? : Gabriella + James

What? : Preparations, first look, portraits, ceremony, and reception at a New Jersey wedding venue.

Where?  The Park Chateau, East Brunswick, New Jersey

When? : November 2018

Our vision is to capture the real moments of the day between us, and the people we love. We are all about capturing the love in the room and making sure we have memories of our loves ones from this day. While we do want to have the traditional posed photos (for posterity) what we really love are the special, intimate moments, the laughter, the smiles, the tears, the bad dance moves, the hugs, the kisses, the joy and pain and love of the day. However you capture that, we love in your photos. I think we are drawn to the intimacy of your images.

I first met Gabriella and James over a year ago, on the coldest of fall days in Asbury Park.  They’d hired me to take their engagement images, and we laughed our way along the boardwalk in the misty, freezing weather.  That would be a wonderful wedding to photograph I remember thinking.  I hope they hire me when they start those plans.

A bit later I heard from them again – they’d set a date, picked a venue, and were full steam ahead with the wedding plans.  On another cold day – this time with brilliant light – we got to work together again, this time when they became husband and wife!  What a beautiful day, what remarkable people, what a gorgeous venue.  Who says summer is the best wedding season?  I beg to differ.  Give me a crystal-clear cold winter wedding day anytime! (Especially if it’s with these two!)

Here are a few of my favorite images from their wedding:

The Park Chateau is, in a word, ridiculous.  (And for those of you who know me, you know that’s a compliment!)  The biggest getting-ready room has multiple makeup stations, a place to WASH YOUR HAIR, and a huge main room big enough to fit my entire apartment into.  And that light?  Don’t get me started! Cheers to any client brave enough to stand in front of an open door in freezing cold weather because the light is really great when I open the doors, are you okay with that? Gabriella got ready surrounded by her mother and the other amazing women in her life.  I love it when everyone comes together in those final moments of preparation to help out! James also got ready at the Park Chateau (images forthcoming from my second photographer!) and then waited nervously in the chapel to see Gabriella for the first time. It was COLD outside.  I know I’ve talked about how winter has been coming, but y’all, it’s here.  The freezing air took our breaths away, but Gabriella and James were still willing to hop outside for a few quick images by the pond! After that, it was time to go inside and get warm.  We stopped on the famous Park Chateau stairs for an image of Gabriella alone before beginning on our list of family and wedding party groupings. After the family and wedding party images we had a quick second to dart into the library and take a few images in front of the fireplace, a handful more portraits of the two of them together – and then it was time to warm up and freshen up for the ceremony.

The sweet sunset ceremony was followed by cocktail hour, and then off to the reception! After the first dance (which was freaking awesome) came some sweet, emotional toasts.  Then it was time to dance, dance, dance! We closed the night out with a few more images in the cold!  I am always so grateful to clients who are willing to brave the elements for a few more images!

When describing her hopes for their wedding day, Gabriella expressed her desired day to be “Warm.  Romantic.  Dramatic.  Joyful.   Sincere.”  The day was all of that and so, so much more.  It was a huge honor to be a part of the day, and to get to know these remarkable human beings just a bit better.  Congratulations, you two!

Private Club Wedding in Manhattan

Private Club Wedding in Manhattan

Who? : Kendall + Jesse

What? : Preparations in a NYC hotel, ceremony and reception at a private club, portraits after the reception in Central Park

Where?  Private club, Manhattan

When? : November 2018

The first time I talked to Kendall on the phone it was like chatting with an old friend.  We hit it off immediately, running through a million topics with the rapid patter of people who had known each other for years.  That explosion of joy continued when I met Kendall and Jesse in Brooklyn Bridge Park a few weeks later for their sunrise engagement session, my most vivid memory of that session being so much laughter.  (And we met a puppy that looked like a piglet, oh it was the best morning.)

I have all of my wedding clients fill out a worksheet in the months leading up to their actual event date.  Some of the questions are expected ones, like what time do you want your coverage to begin? and how many people will be giving toasts at your reception?  You know, those crucial logistics that help me get to know a wedding inside and out.  When asked about her vision for their wedding photography, Kendall said:

110% I was drawn to your work because of what you can do with light; its literally magic. Also, I KNOW you were at our engagement photos because I have looked (okay gawked) at the images 100 times, but it seems like you were only there with us for a sliver of a moment! I don’t know how, but you were able to document that morning while still allowing Jesse and I to be entirely in our own world. The way you were able to capture something so intimate without crowding and staging us was, again, genuinely magic. I am so at ease about the wedding day photos.

Here are a few of my favorite images from their wedding:

Kendall and Jesse got ready separately, but close by.  Once they were ready, they chose to see each other in the magnificent library of the club they were married at.  It was a quiet moment, and so sweet to see them get a little time together before the hustle and bustle of family photographs began! How do you even begin to describe someone like Kendall?  She’s gorgeous – that’s obvious just by looking at her.  She’s also gorgeous inside.  When she looks at you, it’s with the blazing joy of the sun.  Everything about her just RADIATES.  She’s a huge hug in human form, and she and Jesse are magnetic together. What to say about this sunny sweet ceremony?  I could go on for days about the light, the space itself, the crystal-clear sweetness of their vows, the charming openness of their tears, but what is that they say?  A picture says a thousand words?  If it does, these pictures scream JOY from the top of the tallest Manhattan building, straight into the sky.
After the ceremony, there were a few more family portraits, and then it was off to their brunch.  I LOVE the way that Kendall and Jesse celebrated their day : wholly them.  The ceremony was in the morning, and the “reception” was an intimate brunch that was over by midafternoon. After brunch, it was time for pictures of the two of them together – I know, what a fun timeline, right?  The ceremony and reception behind them, we hopped into a vintage cab and headed over to Central Park to chase the sunset together.

I LOVED seeing how this timeline unfolded.  They had an incredible day, followed by time alone together.  Moving the portraits to after the entire reception freed up much of the earlier part of the day, while still allowing lots of time in the park later! Frozen fingers, frozen toes, and one of my favorite spots in the entire city.   The first place I ever took portraits in New York was at Bethesda Terrace, and every time I go back my heart expands just a little bit more.

After this last image, the sun fully set over the park and we realized that I was the only one with a phone and the ability to call an Uber.  Kendall and Jesse and I carpooled back over to their hotel, where they informed me they were taking a very long nap and then having a bunch of their friends over for a nighttime party in their suite.  The perfect end to a perfect day?  I think so.

Kendall and Jesse, y’all have my heart.

Wedding at Battery Gardens

Wedding at Battery Gardens

Who? : Sara + Michael

What? : Preparations at the W New York Downtown, a first look and portraits at Brooklyn Bridge Park, ceremony and reception at a restaurant venue overlooking Battery Park.

Where?  Battery Gardens, New York

When? : November 2018

While compiling the details of Sara and Michael’s wedding day, I asked them something I often ask my clients : How did you meet?

Sara’s answer:  We met online. I recently requested our original texts back and forth from the dating app we used (The League) and it turns out they were pretty boring – just a few exchanges and then an offer to meet for brunch. Good thing the first date was much more interesting! We couldn’t say goodbye after brunch, so Michael invited me to walk over a few blocks and see his grandfather’s butcher shop…Then we hit up a street fair…Then, I politely tried to excuse myself because I had a housewarming party to go to. I told Michael that he was “more than welcome to come”, expecting him to turn down the offer. But he didn’t! So he came with me and met a bunch of my friends, and some new people I had never met before. People kept asking how long we’d been dating and I had to awkwardly explain we met that morning…. Even all that time wasn’t quite enough, so we went to dinner that evening. 13 hour marathon date, and now 3 years later we’re getting married!

Thank goodness that epic first date didn’t end, because it brought Sara and Michael to an amazingly crisp, gorgeous fall day in New York, saying I do while the sun set over Battery Park.   It was the kind of day you see online when you google “perfect fall day in Manhattan,” orange leaves scattered on sidewalks, winter in the air, and a sunset that spiraled into a bright orange blaze.  It was another flawless marathon day in their history of marathon days, and it surely won’t be their last!

Here are a few of my favorite images from their wedding:

I’ve been asked before if I bring a styling kit or detail kit with me to weddings.  The answer is no, I love to work with what I find in my environment.  That will help me tell a story in a way that details that I brought myself never could.  This is Michael’s ring, laid on a “diamond” from the hotel decor! Michael is WONDERFUL.  Warm and kind, and loves Sara with a strength that’s immediately visible.  He’s a Crossfitter, a New York bike rider, and has a smile that could light up the city at night.  He got ready surrounded by his hilarious groomsmen, just a few floors below where Sara was getting ready with her family and bridesmaids. Sara is gorgeous, inside and out, and not just because she’s an avid yogi.  She’s a beautiful writer and speaker, chooses her words with clarity and precision, and loves with a ferocity that’s brilliant to see. After getting ready at the W Downtown, we hailed a series of Ubers and made the trek over the bridge to Brooklyn Bridge Park.  Hidden away on a fourth floor overlook, Sara and Michael saw each other for the first time on their wedding day. Instead of exchanging gifts separately, before seeing each other, Sara and Michael opted to exchange their gifts at their first look. It made this time even more meaningful, and I hope this is a tradition that catches on!  I love that they got to see each other’s faces when they opened their gifts and read their cards. After the first look, we had a bit of time to wander Brooklyn Bridge Park.  We’d been anticipating terrible weather and torrential rain, so this brilliantly bright day was an incredibly welcome surprise.  Since most New Yorkers had also expected awful weather, the park was even less crowded than usual.  Win, win! After a brief time taking very serious (and not so serious!) wedding party images, it was time to head back to Battery Gardens for some family portraits, a quick break, and the ceremony.
The moments before a ceremony are so special.  Whether you’re polishing your rings or greeting your grandmother, every second practically quivers with anticipation.  It’s one of my favorite parts of the day! This ceremony!  OH, this ceremony.  There was debate all morning about whether or not the crazy high winds near Battery Park would push the ceremony indoors.  Sara and Michael made the difficult decision to move it inside, and it was a great choice.  The sun set right through the windows, turning the whole ceremony golden. As the couple were huge fans of the outside area, and as we didn’t get to have the ceremony there, I felt it only fitting to take some late sunset images outdoors.  Cheers to these two for braving the insane winds for a few extra portraits! After cocktail hour, a few more portraits, and some detail images of the room, it was time to PARTY.  Sara and Michael exploded into the room, ready to start the dinner-and-dancing part of the night! I love the written word.  I love public speaking.  I love public speaking of the written word.  In short, I love toasts.  I love it when people stand up and speak from the heart, saying words they spent time lovingly crafted about people they adore.  After some of the most meaningful, gorgeous speeches I’ve ever heard (and a pretty rad dinner, too!) Sara and Michael took to the floor for their first official dance as husband and wife. The rest of the night was filled with dancing, more hugs, more love, and more laughter.  The kind of laughter that comes from things like locking your friends out of the reception and rubbing your butt on the door while they pretend to spank you.  You know, stuff like that.Sara and Michael, if you’re reading this on your epic honeymoon to Thailand and Laos, THANK YOU.  Thank you for sharing your lives, your celebration, and the last crazy gorgeous fall day in New York with me.  Thank you for trusting me with your memories.  I’ll follow along on your honeymoon adventures via Instagram – take your time getting back.  It’s pretty cold back home. ❤️

Wedding at 501 Union

Wedding at 501 Union

Who? : Jill + David

What? : Preparations at home and a downtown Brooklyn hotel.  Portraits at Brooklyn Bridge Park. Ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception at a wedding venue in Gowanus.

Where?  501 Union

When? : October 2018

Family.  Family is everything.  To watch Jill and David with their families is to watch true joy, true love, and true community.  From David’s brilliant daughters to Jill’s dads walking her down the aisle together, heartfelt toasts to oh no, I’m crying again, thanks David vows, the entire day was extraordinarily moving, welcoming  and nearly explosive with joy.

It’s often hard to put wedding days into words.  I get to witness amazing things and amazing people, week in and week out.  Some people, however, radiate a little extra light into the world.  Jill and David are two such people.  As I took mental notes during the day so I could remember the event, the people, and what in the world I could say in a blog post later, things like David is an extraordinary father and I just want to hug Jill so hard every time she smiles kept imprinting themselves on my mind.  These two – they are completely special human beings.  You know what I mean – those people that just turn the lights up in the room when they walk in, push the frequency to a warmer level, the ones you just have to know and how amazing these families found each other and can I get myself invited to their next party?

During his vows, David told Jill to look at the people around them, naming how special each person was.  There wasn’t a dry eye in the house, mine included.  I hope the both of them keep looking around, and at each other, for the rest of their lives.  How loved they are.

Here are a few of my favorite images from their wedding

I started my day at David and Jill’s house, where David got ready with some people very near and dear to his heart.  David has two daughters who are absolute miracles, and they then traveled to the hotel to meet up with Jill while she got ready.

Jill got ready at a Hampton Inn near Brooklyn Bridge Park that I would gladly move into tomorrow. You could fit my entire apartment into the gorgeous living room of her suite.

Daisy and Jamie are amazing girls. It really was a huge honor to capture the moments of each of them throughout the day. My daughters were by my side when I married my husband, and looking back on the images of them is one of my favorite things about our wedding pictures.

Then it was time to get Jill ready – which means all hands on deck!

Pro tip : If you’re getting ready surrounded by those you love, let’s get them dressed first.  Set aside some time in your timeline for them to get ready – your mom, aunt, sister, dad, grandmother, man of honor, best friend, whoever is going to help you get dressed.  That way they’ll be all ready while you get ready!

bride getting ready at hampton inn brooklyn downtown

After Jill got dressed, it was time for her and David to see each other for the first time.  After battling with some very weirdly complicated sliding glass doors (We think they were sliding?  Or maybe they opened out?  They were weird, and baffled several intelligent adults completely!), they saw each other on the glassed-in balcony of their hotel.

indoor first look

Jill and David opted to give each other gifts at their first look, which I loved.  Many couples exchange gifts the morning of their wedding, but this way they got to see the other’s reaction in person!

After the first look and gift exchange, it was off to Brooklyn Bridge Park for a few moments for some portraits.

Then we hopped in Uber’s and settled in at 501 Union.  We took some family pictures, Jill and David got a much-needed break, and guests started arriving. I love this image of the 501 Union team making sure the flowers were misty fresh – see the water droplets in the air?

David’s girls walked down the aisle after him.  They’re amazing women – and how could they not be?  David is a simply magnificent, kind, loving father.

There are moments at every wedding that just stick.  This was one of those moments.  David’s girls grabbed each other’s hands as the ceremony started, and didn’t let go until it was over.

This ceremony.  THIS.  CEREMONY.  I know the phrase “Not a dry eye in the house” gets used a lot in reference to weddings, but it was so true.  David’s vows. Jill’s vows.  The tears and emotion.  The prayer circle around their rings.  The love, the family.  This was everything. After the ceremony it was time to drink, dance, and hug hug hug.  The guests wandered through the bar area of 501 Union, we took some more family pictures, documented the hugging during cocktail hour, and took some pictures of the truly exceptional decor in the reception space.

What comes after cocktail hour?  OH RIGHT.  The PARTY.

Jill’s dad and stepdad gave a toast together.  What a family.  I know I keep saying that, but it’s so purely true.  The love in that room was a vibrant thing. After dancing with her dads, Jill danced with her mom.  I loved how beautiful these moments were. Jill and David cut their cake, then presented an anniversary cake to David’s parents. We closed the night out with a few more portraits at 501 Union. Jill and David, thank you for having me to document your gorgeous day for you!

Wedding at the Sleepy Hollow Country Club

Wedding at the Sleepy Hollow Country Club

Who? : Casey + Jack

What? : Preparations, first look, portraits, cocktail hour, and reception at a turn of the century manor house in Sleepy Hollow, New York.  Ceremony at a nearby church.

Where?  The Sleepy Hollow Country Club

When? : October 2018

I first met Jack and Casey via an email from Jack’s mother that read : “We heard about your and your marvelous photography from our friends.”  It’s always excellent to begin that way, when a past client hands my name over, knowing that I’m going to take care of their loved ones and that we’ll be a great fit together.  And we were, right from the start.  Jack and Casey are from amazing families, with warm, incredible mothers, fantastic fathers, and a sprawl of siblings, cousins, and friends that surround them with so much love that you can’t remember where friend stops and family begins.

Their wedding was on a fall day so clear and bright, and so full of light that it was only inevitable that it slide towards the most flawless of orange sunsets and end in a blaze of sparklers on the steps of the club.  Jack and Casey, thank you for being bright, amazing human beings and bringing me into your day.  Documenting it for you was as much of a treat as the gorgeous cool weather!

Here are a few of my favorite images from their wedding:

Casey got ready in one of the rooms at the club. These rooms aren’t just rooms, they’re little kingdoms full of direct beams of light, high ceilings, and magic. I can’t imagine a more gorgeous, fitting space to get ready for a wedding than at the club itself. I mean, LOOK at that LIGHT. (And that gorgeous woman, too!)

Not to be outdone, Jack had his one room one floor up to get ready in. Unsurprisingly, he also had some pretty perfect sunshine.

It’s October. I’ve been on a horror movie kick, and nothing has been creeping me out (and amazing me) quite like the new Haunting of Hill House on Netflix. When I saw the praying statue, I knew I had a great element to add to the already-awesome shot of Casey getting her lips touched up. Someone to watch over us indeed, am I right?

Casey’s hair was PERFECT. Smooth and sleek, but with boho braids to lighten the look.

Light, light, light. You know I love it. It was everywhere, around every corner, in front of every perfectly placed window. Seeing moments come to life in that setting was nothing short of completely magical.

“Some people like to do their first look on the stairs,” someone at the venue told me. I am pretty sure they suggested a few other spots, but it was all white noise once my eyes locked on this staircase. Drenched in directional light, warm and welcoming, where better to lay eyes on your loved one for the first time on your wedding day? Hi, drama.

Then it was time for a quick stroll around the grounds of the club for some images pre-ceremony.

Sometimes weddings are crazy, sometimes they’re calm. No matter how the day is flowing (and this one flowed with extreme peace and ease!), I always try to take time to do that little something EXTRA. This day’s extra was brought to you by arching trees, a bright sky, and a little in-camera double exposure action.

Cocktail hour sprawled across the lawn behind the club – I LOVE these two men chatting, oblivious to the fact that a overexcited photographer was insanely grinning from the back steps over the symmetry, the light, and the shadows behind them.

…and a few more portraits of Casey? Yes, please. Jack’s mother had requested an image of Casey on the stairs, and I was only too happy to oblige.

The reception took place on the back lawn, under a tent. The sun set directly through the clear sides of the tent, bathing the tables in the warmest of light.

Jack and Casey had a choreographed first dance. They’re great dancers, this is true. But what really stays with me, even now, is how HAPPY they were, how lively, how cheerfully overjoyed. THAT makes a great first dance.

After a lively first dance, it was time for two pretttttty spectacular parent dances.

Good night and good bye, what a gorgeous ending to the first truly fall wedding of the year. Crisp light, crisp weather, incredible people, an amazing party – let’s do it again next year y’all, okay? One year anniversary party? Just name the place, I’ll be there.
