Wedding + Vow Renewal at the Vizcaya

Wedding + Vow Renewal at the Vizcaya

Who? : Christine + Jared

What? : Wedding in Miami in 2009, vow renewal at the same venue in 2019

Where?  Vizcaya Museum and Gardens

When? : March 2009 and March 2019

Talk about full circle.  I met Christine and Jared for the first time way before their 2009 Miami wedding – we were all living in Tallahassee, Florida, and I’d been commissioned to photograph their engagement session.  I still remember walking around downtown Tallahassee (remember Gallie Alley, you two?) as vividly as I remember traveling to Miami for their wedding.  Since 2009, I’ve photographed many other things for this remarkable couple as they have since added three hilarious, wonderful children to their family.

Christine and Jared are, simply put, tremendous people.  Individually they are hilarious, warm, welcoming, razor-sharp smart, charming, gorgeous, and kind. Together?  They’re a supernova of sunshine.  It was a ferociously huge honor to travel back to Vizcaya for their vow renewal on their tenth anniversary to create some more images, this time with their children.

See you back in Miami in 2029?  I’m there if you’re there.

Here are a few of my favorite images from their portrait session in 2019:

Ocean Club Bahamas Wedding

Ocean Club Bahamas Wedding

Who? : Jenny + James

What? : Rehearsal dinner, wedding, and reception at the Four Seasons resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas

Where?  The Ocean Club

When? : January 2019

I first met Jenny and James at Jenny’s sister’s Philadelphia wedding.  I was immediately besotted with Jenny, Meredith, their brother, their parents, and their entire family.  At once loving, tight-knit, warm and welcoming, they’re also funny, sweet, and know how to throw a spectacular party.  When Jenny’s amazing event planner Tracie Domino called me about Jenny’s destination wedding, I practically tripped over myself with my excitement to work with this amazing family again.

From the rehearsal dinner by the beach to dinner and dancing under a tent covered in fairy lights, the entire weekend was perfect.  I know that words on wedding photography blogs start to sound the same after awhile – everyone has amazing clients, everyone has amazing weekends, every venue is amazing.  But these people?  This weekend?  These families?  Amazing is the only word for it.  I can’t wait for the next wedding, the next party, and the next time I get to work with these spectacular human beings.  Jenny, James, Meredith, Meredith’s James, Andrew, Carol, Bob – you’re the best.  Always and forever.

Wedding at Quantum Leap Winery

Wedding at Quantum Leap Winery

Who? : Kalen and Zachary

What? : Preparations in an AirBnB, first look at a nearby park, ceremony and reception at a winery.

Where?  Quantum Leap Winery, Winter Park, Florida

When? : December 2018

I fell in love with Susan’s work because it is pure art. Her creative eye and ability to capture the unexpected is unprecedented. We love her elegant, documentary-style photos and want her to feel free to get as artistic as she wants! We trust her fully and will be so proud and honored to hang her pictures on our walls and share them with friends, family, future children, potential employers, the checkout lady at Publix — Really just anyone we can.

As if I weren’t already enough in love with Kalen myself before she filled out my Wedding Day Worksheet, this paragraph above sealed the deal!

I first met Kalen and Zachary through email, as is often the case with destination clients.  However, we also got to meet – which is not often the case for destination clients.  Kalen and Zachary are both incredible performers at Universal Studios in Orlando, and I got to see them sing when I was there on vacation this past summer.  Seeing them in their element like that was electric; they’re dynamic talents with huge stage presences, and their love for what they do is so palpable.

I knew their wedding day was going to be uniquely, amazingly them…and it was.  From Kalen’s Broadway-themed playlist while she got ready to her sparkly makeup-kit-on-wheels-with-lights, they had me at the very beginning.  Add to that custom leather jackets, a first look near an alligator pond (we didn’t see alligators, thank goodness, Florida I’ve missed you)nighttime portraits lit by the headlights of Kalen’s dad’s vintage car, a first dance by a barbershop quartet, a sparkler exit from the ceremony to the reception, and one of the best bands I have EVER HEARD, the day was a heart explosion from start to finish.

Kalen and Zachary, you two are magic.  There is no other word for it.  I am deeply thankful from the bottom of my heart that you brought me to Florida to document your day.  And I hope you managed to get packed by the time your flight took off for Germany on Monday…

Alfond Inn Wedding

Alfond Inn Wedding

Who? : Amanda + Ben

What? : Destination wedding in Winter Park, Florida

Where?  The Alfond Inn

When? : December 2018

I don’t even know where to start with this wedding, so I’ll start back in 2007.  I was living in Tallahassee, Florida, and photographed the headshots for a bunch of juniors and senior theatre majors at FSU.  Years after that, I’m living in New York, and so are many of my past clients.  Those clients led me to Amanda, a FSU alumni herself.  I first encountered Amanda in Hello Dolly on Broadway, where she went on for a role she understudied (and she was amazing).  I first encountered Ben without realizing it, seeing him in Book of Mormon before I knew he was Amanda’s Ben.

Being hired to photograph this wedding was an actual dream come true. Everything about Amanda and Ben is just…yeah, it’s all excellent.  They’re crazily, insanely talented individuals.  They’re hard workers, passionate about their dreams and their craft, and true triple threats.  They’re adorably wonderfully gorgeous, just beautiful human beings inside and out.  They’re funny, ferociously love their family and friends, and love each other with a truth and depth that is just really, really freaking gorgeous to see.

And their wedding?  THEIR WEDDING.  We started the day at the Alfond Inn, with Amanda in her suite.  The rain was pouring down, streaking the windows and pattering on the pool outside.  Amanda got ready, Ben got ready.  They exchanged letters they had written each other.  (We all cried).  They prepared to see each other for the first time on a covered patio outside the Alfond – and the sun came out.  The rain stopped, the clouds parted, they saw each other (we all cried), and we took pictures outside.   The second we went back in, the clouds covered up and the rest of the day was moody and dreamy outside.

From their prep time at the Alfond before the ceremony, their sweet first look, the charm of their wedding vows, through to the gorgeous reception, the whole day was everything.  Choosing a favorite part is nearly impossible.  Was it Amanda and her childhood best friend tearing up when she put her mother’s necklace on as a bracelet?  Was it Ben, struggling to keep a straight face when reading Amanda’s letter to him, or the way his eyes actually lit up when he saw her come down the aisle?  Perhaps it was Amanda’s dad, who found a lost recording of Amanda’s late mother singing Wind Beneath My Wings (note : Amanda was in Hello Dolly with, yes, Bette Midler) and played it for the father/daughter dance?

Side note : I’ve never had to go to the bathroom and wash my face after a father/daughter dance before.  WE.  ALL.  CRIED.

Amanda and Ben, thank you.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.  Thank you for being so kind and open in front of my lens.  Thank you for treating me and my team like family.  Thank you for sharing your day, your love, and your hearts with me.  I am eternally grateful.  Now go lay on a beach – you deserve it!

Fall Wedding at Riverside Farm

Fall Wedding at Riverside Farm

Who? : Anna Lee + Bill

What? : Preparations, ceremony, and reception in a private Vermont barn wedding venue

Where?  Riverside Farm, Pittsfield, Vermont

When? : October 2018

A bride who has dedicated her career to caring for others, loves museums, and finds joy in travel.  A groom who dreams of owning his own BBQ restaurant and loves mountain bikes, backpacking, and camping.  Add these two amazing human beings together, bind their love with an unwavering faith, and pledge forever to each other with an engagement amidst the bluebonnets.    It’s only fitting that such joyous human beings say “I do” under the flawless Vermont fall foliage, surrounded by an unseasonably warm day that can only have been brought with them from Texas!  Anna Lee and Bill,  you’re both glorious rays of sunny Texas sunshine.  Thank you for making that fall Vermont day all the brighter!

Riverside Farm Wedding

Who? : Stephanie + Austin

What? : Preparations, ceremony, and reception at a farm and barn venue in Vermont

Where? Riverside Farm, Pittsfield, Vermont

When? : September 2018

It’s hard to tell precisely the second I fell super hard for these two.  Was it when Stephanie revealed that she had a competitive streak so wide that she had to give the actual best gift ever to her bridesmaids?  Was it when Austin cut off the end of his tie because it was too long?  The moment Austin revealed his past as a child sports drink model?  When Stephanie’s sister sang their first dance song?  When Stephanie’s father gave a speech so extraordinary that everyone was wiping away tears?  Maybe the moment when Stephanie and Austin caught me weeping (just a bit, I swear) as they came back down the aisle and loudly questioned “IS SUSAN CRYING?”

It was all of those moments, and so many more, that revealed how amazing this couple is, how beloved they are by family and friends, and how wonderfully vibrant the air around them is.  It was a joy to spend the day with them and their amazing families, and a huge honor to capture these images for them.

What? : Preparations in Bridgehampton at a private home, ceremony on the beach, and reception in a beachside club

Where?  The Bridgehampton Tennis and Surf Club

When? : September 2018

When you envision a wedding on the beach, you wish for certain things.  A clear, sunny day with brilliant clouds.  A quiet beach.  Amazing food, shared with your family and friends.  A dance party that spills out onto a back deck, the surf crashing in the distance.  Maybe even a bonfire to end the night, if that’s not asking too much?  Casey and David got all of that and so much more for their wedding weekend!  Labor Day weekend in the Hamptons is always special, and this one was no exception.  From the quiet charm of their summer home, to the warmth of their families,  to the fire dancers on the beach in the early hours of the morning, this Bridgehampton wedding was everything a beach wedding should be!

Krissy and Eddie are a couple guided by their faith, their love for family, and their love for each other.  With the magnificent backdrop of one of my favorite venues of all time, Riverside Farm, they exchanged their vows under the wedding tree and partied the night away in the exquisite reception barn.  From Krissy praying with her family to Eddie tearing up when she came down the aisle, the love they have for each other and their faith truly lit up even the most overcast of summer days.  Krissy and Eddie, thank you for allowing me to document your day!

Destination Wedding Photographer

Early Spring Wedding at the Bridge Building

Who? : Erin + Dave

What? : Indoor wedding and reception overlooking Nashville

Where? :  The Bridge Building, Nashville, Tennessee

When? : March 2018

I have been a destination wedding photographer for well over a decade and a half now.  It began when I was a wedding photographer in Florida, traveling from Tallahassee to Miami at first to shoot weddings on the beaches in the southern part of the state.  As my work in Miami became more frequent, clients began hiring me to go to the Bahamas and nearby islands to shoot their destination weddings.  As the years rolled by, one destination wedding shoot led to another, then another, then another.

With a busy wedding season here in New York, it’s always nice to take a weekend here and there and travel to a new location for an event.  This incredible couple hired me to go to Nashville for their wedding.  Despite yet another nor’easter  battering New York, everyone was able to make the trip (some earlier than planned, some later!) down to slightly warmer Nashville for the celebration.

After a weekend full of hot chicken, walks around downtown, avoiding the crowds in town for the Eagles concert, navigating crazy soccer-related travel, and bits of rain, I’m back home in New York.  But I’d be lying if I said my heart wasn’t still back down south with Erin, Dave, their remarkable families, and wonderful friends.  It was a warm, welcoming weekend, and it was such an honor to work with such and incredible couple.

Ocean House Wedding

This Ocean House wedding marked my first time in Watch Hill, Rhode Island.  I’ve photographed in Mystic, Stonington, and nearby Newport, but never Watch Hill.  After spending a glorious summer Saturday there, I’m already ready to go back.    Situated on the tops of the Watch Hill bluffs, the Ocean House is one of only five US resorts to obtain the prestigious triple Five-Star honor.  From the private beach to the croquet lawn, the putting green to the Watch Hill Chapel, every square inch of this property is meticulously designed and maintained.  Danielle and Chris were glorious to work with, and a delight to photograph.  I know this won’t be my last time in Watch Hill – maybe next time I’ll even run into the Ocean House’s best-known neighbor, Taylor Swift!

Ocean House Morgan Suite
We started the day in the Morgan Suite at the Ocean House. This two-floor suite was inspired by the interior of yachts. There really are no words for how meticulously, flawlessly designed the space is. You truly do have to see it to believe it!

Danielle and Chris, it was so wonderful to travel to Watch Hill to spend your wedding day with you!  From the phenomenal weather (no rain plans!) to the fantastic party, every bit of your day was perfect.  I hope you’re having a wonderful honeymoon trip, and I can’t wait to share the rest of your images with you soon!

Ritz Carlton Naples Wedding

This Ritz Carlton Naples wedding illustrates everything that I miss about living in Florida.  For those of you who know me, you’re probably already laughing – miss Florida?  I know I’m pretty clear about my distaste for the sun, any weather condition over seventy degrees, sweating, and the outdoors in general.  How could I miss living in a state that provides all of those things?  For one, I miss the light.  I miss how the sun takes its’ sweet time wandering down towards the horizon, the sun set lasting for what seems like hours.  Here in the city, when the sun sets, it’s a rush to pure darkness.  In Florida, the light fades so slowly to sunset that there is ample time to take advantage of it for portraits.  Second, I miss the kindness of Floridians.  Not brisk, rushed, rude or curt, Floridians take the time to give you directions, walk you to the beach instead of just pointing, and when they ask “How’s your day?” you know they really mean it.

It was only fitting that I work with one of the kindest, sweetest Philadelphia coordinators at this Ritz Carlton Naples wedding.  Gina Sole was ever so lovely, referring Kelly and Jordan to me.  It was wonderful to travel with her back to the state that I lived in for eight years, revisiting beaches I’d shot on less than a decade ago.  It was also only appropriate, given the lovely setting, that the bride and groom were as sweet as Kelly and Jordan.  Delightful, funny, warm, and welcoming, Kelly and Jordan created a destination wedding for their guests that was intimate, inviting, and Florida-perfect.

Macro shot of engagement ring
Good light for the ring shot? No problem. The bride’s room overlooked the Gulf of Mexico, and the sun streaming through the patio doors was luscious.
Gold wedding rings for Jewish ceremony
During a Jewish wedding ceremony, the groom gives the bride a ring, which is usually a plain gold wedding band. This ring is then placed on the bride’s right index finger. Kelly and Jordan had two gorgeous, delicate gold bands for their wedding ceremony.
Jimmy Choo wedding shoes with gold heel
After a few very dark, wintery weeks back in New York, the Florida sun was so brilliant that it almost hurt my eyes. It was really nice to be able to work with dramatic light again!
Vera Wang wedding dress for a beach wedding
The bride put great care into the choosing of her Vera Wang wedding gown, and I think it was well worth it. The dress fit her like a glove, and was just perfect for the beachy setting.
Bride putting on earrings
The quiet moments before the ceremony, or before the bride sees the groom for the first time, are among my favorite moments on a wedding day. I love this image of Kelly putting on her earrings before heading out to see Jordan for their portraits together.
Ritz Carlton Naples wedding
The Ritz Carlton Naples is perfectly situated so that the sun sets right over the water. The entire grounds are phenomenal for photography, and the winter sun just cannot be beat.
Ritz Carlton Naples wedding on the beach
Sand in your lenses, sand in your cameras, sand all in your clothes, sand everywhere. Oh, the joys of a beach wedding! It’s all worth it, every last bit, for images like this!
Portraits at a Ritz Carlton Naples wedding
The bride and groom planned ample time for some portraits outdoors, just the two of them. It’s always wonderful when a timeline goes off without a hitch (thank you, Gina Sole!) so that we can really make the most of this time.

The Center Court and the Tea Garden are popular locations for wedding portraits, but I prefer to leave the popular spots and try to find portrait spots that are a bit unique. The first thing I look for is light, and the Ritz Carlton Naples had that in spades.
Bride at Naples Ritz Carlton wedding
If you ever get a chance to go to Naples, GO. The beaches are the perfect mix of white sand and blue ocean. I remember the first time I went to the Jersey Shore (no offense, Shore) and thought “This is not a beach.” The sand should feel like powder, and the water should be like a warm bath. Just like Naples.
Best beach wedding
The juxtaposition of light and shadow is my favorite thing. I love having time with the bride and groom before sunset to create images with dramatic light and deep, lengthening shadows.
Cream dinner jacket
I wish more grooms would wear gorgeous cream dinner jackets, don’t you?
Nighttime beach wedding
The ceremony was set for sundown, but due to circumstances beyond our control, things didn’t get started until after dark. No worries. Pop a pretty light under the chuppah, trust in your photographic skills, and don’t even break a sweat. (Well, maybe a little sweat. It was DARK!)
Ritz Carlton Naples wedding at night
The gorgeous directional light under the chuppah was the perfect contrast to the darkness of the scene. Kelly is so gorgeous, and I love this moment of the wind catching her veil and sweeping it across her face.
Nighttime wedding on the beach
The candles lining the path helped illuminate the ceremony. It was beautiful, intimate, and very, very romantic.
Nighttime wedding ceremony
Just gorgeous.
Center Court Ritz Carlton
After the ceremony on the beach, it was off to the Center Court for cocktail hour, into the Plaza Ballroom for dinner, and then out to the Beach House for dancing!
Wedding Reportage
With just over 100 guests, the entire day had a wonderfully intimate feel. I LOVE the flower girl and her little sister having a moment just before dinner!
Ritz Carlton Naples Beach House
The Beach House was a great spot for dancing and the after party!
Florida sunset wedding
There is nothing – NOTHING – like a Florida sunset.

Kelly and Jordan, thank you so much for bringing me all the way down to Naples to photograph your wedding.  It was warm, wonderful, and beautiful – just like you both.  I hope your honeymoon is equally warm and wonderful, and I can’t wait to share your images with you when you return!

Louisville, Kentucky Wedding

Eden and Gregory’s Louisville wedding was not the first time I had ever been to Kentucky.  We traveled there several years prior to photograph Eden’s brother’s wedding to the fantastic Leea.  It was my first time to Kentucky, my first time to the Kentucky Derby, my first time staying at the gorgeous Brown Hotel, and my first experience with the charm and kindness of Louisville.  I remember meeting Eden for the first time at the Derby and thinking, “When this woman gets married I hope she calls me!”  I was first struck by Eden’s exceptional beauty, but as I spent her wedding weekend surrounded by her family and friends, I realized that there is more to this woman than a gorgeous face.  She is kind, she is sweet, she has a fantastically inviting laugh, she is illuminated by her faith, and she is so dearly loved.  I was repeatedly awed by the sweetness of Eden’s family, and even more awed by the intense love that Eden and Gregory have for each other.  From the rehearsal dinner to the end of the wedding day, they truly only had eyes for each other.

Louisville Wedding Photographer
The day before the wedding, Eden’s family hosted a rehearsal dinner at their new farm. I don’t normally do site visits or scout locations, but I had to pull Eden and Gregory into the gorgeous light that I hoped would materialize in my chosen portrait location for their wedding day!
Louisville Wedding Photography
I love the silhouette of the couple against the beautiful Kentucky sunset.
Louisville Wedding Pics
During the rehearsal dinner, Eden sang to Gregory. It was such a sweet gesture and resulted in some moving, beautiful moments.
Louisville Wedding Rehearsal Dinner
The bride’s brother had a slideshow created for the rehearsal dinner that showed images of Eden and Gregory, both growing up and together. I love this moment between the two of them while they were watching the slideshow.
Jimmy Choo wedding flats
I arrived at the farm bright and early on the wedding day. The bride was still at the salon getting her hair done, so I had a few moments alone with some of her beautiful details. These are her Jimmy Choo flats (smart girl!) on one of the hay bales in the family’s barn.
Creative Wedding Ring Photograph
The bride’s ring was so delicate and lovely. I love that I had the time to really work on a creative image for her, since she’d left the ring for me at the house before heading out to the salon.
Bride getting her makeup done
The team from MAC did a wonderful job helping create the bride’s wedding day makeup look.
Lazaro wedding gown
The bride’s gorgeous Lazaro ball gown was both delicate and dramatic, a perfect fit for her vibrant personality.
Creative picture of men's wedding ring
I love that I also had the chance to photograph the groom’s wedding band before the ceremony. Oftentimes, the band is with the groomsmen and we don’t always get to photograph it. The bride thoughtfully made sure that all bands and rings were in her possession before the ceremony!
Bride getting ready
It is always so lovely when brides get ready in a location that is meaningful to them. Eden chose to get ready (as well as to have her reception) at her family’s new farm.
Louisville Wedding
I am always striving to find new and different ways to document a wedding. Shooting through these two doors created a great framing opportunity for this image of the bride getting ready, and it created gorgeous dark space that further pushes the viewer’s eye towards the main subject.
Bridal portrait
Sometimes the simplest things are the most beautiful things. This clean, crisp, perfectly lit bridal image really illuminates everything I love about wedding day portraiture.
Portrait of bride with veil
Oh, light! I love light! The lovely woman on the left is married to the bride’s brother, and I photographed her wedding in 2011. I love the beautiful light on her face in this image!
Bride and mother
The bride and her mother have such a beautiful relationship. There were so many gorgeous moments between the two of them, from the bridal luncheon all the way through the reception on the wedding day.
Folklore Cinema
Before leaving for the ceremony, the bride received a gift from her groom. Even though the space was tight to document this moment, I was so pleased to be working alongside Folklore Cinema. They were able to occupy the space with me perfectly, both of us getting the shots that we needed. Erin and Dennis are a delight to work with, as well as extraordinarily talented. I hope our paths cross again, I’d love to work with them at another wedding!
First look with dad
Eden’s closeness with her family was such a joy to witness. She wanted to have a first look with her father before the ceremony, and that moment turned into a wonderful series of images with her father and then her two fantastic brothers.
Portrait of bride in barn
The rehearsal dinner had been held in this barn the night before, and I knew that I wanted to make some portraits there on the wedding day. I love the reception tent peeking out of the background!
Portrait of a bride
Eden was glorious in front of the camera; graceful and lovely.
Portrait of bride with veil
After some family and bridal party portraits at the barn, it was back inside for some more images of the bride alone. I always love a few minutes with the bride by herself before the ceremony. This allowed us to create some quiet, intimate portraits of her before leaving for the church.
Portrait of bride in barn
Any time I can create portraits in a location that is meaningful to my clients, I will. This farm serves as a gathering place for Eden’s family, and is so precious to them.
Bride getting dressed
So as to not get her dress terribly wrinkled en route, Eden changed back into her street clothes before heading to the church. This allowed me to document her getting dressed not once, but twice!
Silhouette of a bride getting ready
The delicate belt perfectly suited the Lazaro gown. I love that you can see how delicately precise Eden’s hair is in this image. Joseph’s Salon and Spa did a wonderful job creating her look!
Bride and her mother
Yet another image of the bride and her mother. As a mom myself, I can’t even imagine having images like this of myself and my daughters. I can only imagine how Eden’s mother felt at this moment!
Portrait of a groom in a barn
Gregory is pure class. Smooth, impeccably dressed, well-mannered, and simply lovely. His attention to detail was on point, and his love for Eden was flawless as well.
White bridal bouquet
In Bloom Again did a wonderful job with the bride’s simple, all-white bouquet.
St. John United Church of Christ Louisville
The ceremony was held at St. John United Church of Christ in Louisville. It was a moving, beautiful ceremony that honored the bride and groom’s faith, love, and family commitment. Their vows were gorgeous and heartfelt.
Jumping the broom
The jumping of the broom is a fantastic tradition. Apparently, the person who jumps the highest is to be the decision maker in the household. I’m not sure who jumped higher, but they seem to be a pretty fantastic team!
Louisville Wedding Pictures
After the ceremony, the bride and groom were waiting for their getaway car in the church parking lot when they stopped to look at their rings. I am greatly appreciative they they stopped in the greatest light ever!
Kentucky Wedding Pictures
The bride and groom set aside some time upon returning to the farm to create some portraits. I so appreciate the great effort they put towards making time for their images, and I think it really paid off! The sunset was extra glorious that night, and the family farm was impeccable.
Bridal portrait at sunset
Although we had created some portraits of the bride before the ceremony, how could I resist the sunset light? I had to get Eden alone for a few more images!
Backlit wedding portrait
As the sun dropped lower and lower in the sky, the light got better and better.
Bride and groom with horses
Creating silhouettes when the sun dips really low on the horizon is one of my favorite things. The bride’s family farm had some fantastic horse sculptures, adding a quirky element to this classic silhouette.
Silhouette bridal portrait
After creating some silhouettes with the bride and groom together, I borrowed Eden alone again for one more dramatic bridal portrait.
Bride and groom in sunlight
I made sure to create many portraits focusing on the groom as well!
Environmental portrait at a wedding
I strive to create a combination of intimate, close-up portraits as well as more environmental images of the bride and groom together.
Backlit wedding portrait
This particular time of day is the perfect time to illuminate my clients in the way I like best – with a beautiful, strong rim of light around their faces.
Backlit wedding veil
I wish every single client that I have would wear a long veil! They’re so dramatic, so sweet, and light up so beautifully!
Beautiful bridal portrait
Eden is so luminous, it’s only fitting that she is lit radiantly as well.
Graceful wedding portrait
Grace, class, sweetness, and light. Everything you could want in a portrait, right?
Black and white wedding portrait
Thank you so much, Eden and Gregory, for taking the time to run around in the field before your reception! I was so thrilled to create these images for you!
Tented wedding reception
The reception was held in a tent on the farm. Triangle Talent did an extraordinary job running the reception and keeping everyone on the dance floor!
Wedding reception dancing
The dance floor was packed all night long.
Bride and groom at wedding reception
The sweetness between the bride and groom continued well into the night!
Bride at wedding reception
The bride hugged everyone, all night. It was so wonderful to see how beloved she is to all of her family and friends.
Kentucky sunset
After one more quick portrait, the night was over. Hopefully we will find our way back to the beautiful Kentucky light for another wedding soon!

Eden and Gregory, thank you so much.  Thank you for having us to Louisville, for being so sweetly welcoming, and for allowing me to document your day.  The love that you have for your families and each other is truly inspirational.  I hope you’re having a fantastic honeymoon, and I can’t wait to share the rest of your images with you soon!

Medellin Wedding

I had been to Cartagena several times, but Carolina and Alfonso’s wedding marked my first visit to Medellin.  The second largest city in Colombia, Medellin is located in the Aburra Valley in South America.  We arrived late at night, taking a rather harrowingly fast car service through the winding hills – in the rain!  The next day we awoke to find ourselves in a bright, warm, beautiful metropolitan area.  Carolina and Alfonso treated us like family, and for the entire weekend we were cared for so beautifully it barely felt like being at work.  Carolina, thank you for going out of your way to make sure our passage to Colombia was perfect.  The care and attention you showed us just reflects the care and attention we later saw you so beautifully give to your family and friends.  You and Alfonso are so beloved, and it showed.  From the “little tent” you erected in your grandfather’s backyard to the party that didn’t break up until dawn, you showed everyone a perfect weekend.  Thank you for having us as a part of it!

Medellin Wedding Photography
The bride got ready in her grandfather’s home. I appreciate her trusting me and not thinking I was crazy when I announced “Okay, you’re going to get ready by this window….but I’m going out into the yard.”
Medellin Wedding Photographer
I love this image of the bride’s engagement ring with her mother’s brooch in the background.
Medellin Wedding Photographers
I feel like it’s my job as a wedding photographer to find interesting angles and new, beautiful ways to tell familiar stories.

The bride also wore her mother’s gorgeous vintage Cartier bracelet. Isn’t it stunning?
Wedding Photographers in Medellin
I think it was so lovely that the bride chose to be married at her grandfather’s home. It was a beautiful property, and the meaning behind the location is so charming.
06-Medellin-Wedding
We had a wonderful amount of time to photograph the bride getting ready, and then it was time to head off to the church for the ceremony.
07-Medellin-Wedding
…but first we had to stop for a quick portrait of Carolina in a beautiful pocket of light.
08-Medellin-Wedding
…and we had to stop for Carolina to talk to her beloved, sweet, adorably wonderful grandfather.
09-Medellin-Wedding
….okay, okay, we also had to stop for some portraits in the gorgeous sunshine.
10-Medellin-Wedding
I love the quiet moments between a bride and her bridal party. They were so sweet, helping Carolina lay out her dress for some portraits.
11-Medellin-Wedding
Don’t you love the bridesmaid dresses? They were so unique and glamorous.
12-Medellin-Wedding
The bride and her dad have such a charming relationship. I might be overusing the word “charming” in this blog post, but there really is no other word for how delightful this family is.
13-Medellin-Wedding
…and beautiful. Did I mention they are all beautiful? Carolina is, inside and out. She’s a kind, sweet-hearted, vibrant woman.
14-Medellin-Wedding
Can you believe this church? The bride and groom were concerned that their nighttime wedding would be “too dark” in the space, so the videographers came the day before and actually hung professional lighting. Amazing, right?
15-Medellin-Wedding
The entire ceremony was so charmingly intimate and loving. See? Charming again!
16-Medellin-Wedding
The church was overflowing during the ceremony. Guests were lining the aisles, standing in the back, and even standing outside. I love this view of the bride and groom coming down the aisle.
17-Medellin-Wedding
The event coordinator was amazing, making sure the cars were moved and I had a place to stand in the street to take a picture of the sparklers. Olga María Bernal of Asterico Eventos & RRPP is extraordinary in all ways!
18-Medellin-Wedding
When Carolina was describing her wedding she described the “little tent” they were putting up in her grandfather’s backyard. If this was a “little tent” I’d hate to see what she thinks is a big one! It was a gorgeous structure that housed the all-night party.
19-Medellin-Wedding
I love this moment with the bride and her father on the dance floor.
20-Medellin-Wedding
The first dance – oh, the first dance. Perfect light. A confetti canon. A killer band. What more can you ask for?
21-Medellin-Wedding
The event lighting was so spectacular that I was able to use it to really enhance and enliven the reception images.
22-Medellin-Wedding
The party went so late that when we were leaving for our flight the next morning at 6am, guests were just coming back to the hotel!
23-Medellin-Wedding
While in Medellin, we also photographed an engagement session at the bride’s grandfather’s house.
24-Medellin-Wedding
I don’t often get to photograph engagement sessions when shooting destination weddings, so this was an excellent treat.
25-Medellin-Wedding
“I’m going to shoot you, then I’m going to look like I’m just pointing my camera at the trees, okay?” I am so thankful to have clients who trust me, even when it seems like I’m doing something ridiculous!
26-Medellin-Wedding
Thank you guys SO much. Thank you for bringing me to your beautiful country, for treating us so kindly, and for letting us witness your incredible weekend. xoxoxo!

Pelican Hill Wedding

Melissa and Bob’s Pelican Hill wedding really started for me way back in 2009 when Melissa’s sister Christie contacted me about her wedding Colts Neck, New Jersey.  I was blown away by the warmth of this extraordinary family, and hoped that someday when Christie’s sister was to be married that I would get to work with them again.  To spend five minutes with these incredible people is to love them; Melissa and Christie’s parents love each other so sweetly, and the entire family is so charming and welcoming.  I was so thrilled to be able to share this day with them and continue working with a family that I have come to think of so dearly.

Pelican Hill Wedding Photography
Moments after taking this shot, the shoe on the right decided to jump over the railing. No big deal, right? Wrong. There was no way to the other side of the balcony without calling security. Luckily my wise assistant fashioned a fishing pole out of a monopod and saved the day – and the shoe.
Pelican Hill Wedding Photographer
Yes, that’s honey. Yes, it was sticky. Yes, we washed the ring when we were done.

While I love a great mist of hairspray for visual interest, my camera did not. The next three minutes were spent de-hair-spraying my lens.

Melissa got ready in one of the wonderful Villas at Pelican Hill.
Bride at Pelican Hill
Before heading out to the ceremony we took a few portraits of the bride alone.

I really, really loved Melissa’s wedding dress! Isn’t the lace gorgeous?
Pelican Hill Wedding Pic
I had to lay down in a sand trap to get this picture, but it was so worth it. This is one of my favorite portraits of the year.
Wedding Photography at Pelican Hill
With only a few minutes to spare for portraits of the bride and groom together, we had to make every second count.

Melissa kept trying to tell me that she wasn’t graceful, but she clearly wasn’t telling the truth!

I would love to go back and shoot at Pelican Hill again. The locations for portraits were just endless.

Sunset Wedding at Pelican Hill
When the sun started to set so brilliantly, I was DETERMINED to get a golf cart and go out on the paths. We were told no, but I tried to gently get around it….until I was told that the “no” was because of wild coyotes. After hearing that, the path near the main building suddenly worked just fine!
Sunny Ravanbach
The floral design by Sunny Ravanbach of White Lilac Inc. was so, so beautiful.
Wedding Party at Pelican Hill
After portraits on the golf course, it was back to the tent for dinner.
Wedding Reception at Pelican Hill
After dinner we headed inside for dancing and dessert.

There are so many great images from the first dance that it was hard to choose just a few to share!
West Coast Music
Jim Eppolito of West Coast Music kept everyone on the dance floor all night!
Portraits at Pelican Hill
For about ten minutes the sunset was crazy dramatic, so naturally we had to head back outside for a few more portraits.
Outdoor Reception at Pelican Hill
The outdoor dinner setting was perfect.

Melissa and Bob, thank you so much for trusting me with your day. Thank you for climbing hills, riding in a golf cart, and avoiding coyotes with me. Most of all, thank you for continuing to treat me like family. You are such delightfully gracious people and working with you was a great pleasure.

Belle Mer Wedding : Kiara + Peter

I had never been to Newport, much less Belle Mer, before Kiara and Peter’s wedding.  We took the train up and as we neared Rhode Island I knew that I was going to love it there.  I was completely enamored with the light, the landscapes, and the beautiful dark blue ocean.  More than that I was enamored with Kiara and Peter.  Sometimes you meet people and you just love them from the start – and that was how I felt from the first time Kiara grabbed me in a huge hug before her rehearsal dinner.  I’m not a huge fan of overt gushing on wedding blogs (seriously, not every wedding can feature The Greatest Love of All Time or The Best Wedding Ever!) but I am a fan of overt gushing about good, kindhearted people who love their families and each other.  Kiara and Peter are just that and the entire weekend was so warm and enveloping that I didn’t want to leave!

Castle Hill Inn Wedding
The weekend started off with a rehearsal dinner at the Castle Hill Inn.
Castle Hill Inn Wedding Photo
We were totally enraptured with Kiara’s Man of Honor, his husband, the entire bridal party, Peter’s children, and …. okay, basically everyone.
Castle Hill Inn Wedding Pictures
Kiara is an insanely good gift-giver. She spent a lot of time really making sure that the gifts to her bridal party were personal and meaningful.
Wedding at Castle Hill Inn
As a mother of stepdaughters myself I was very moved by Kiara’s relationship with Peter’s daughter.
Wedding Photo at Castle Hill Inn
There was no shortage of excellent moments, actions, and fantastic reactions.

It’s very easy to see where Kiara gets her sweet spirit from. Her mother was charming, gracious, and gorgeous.
Vanderbilt Grace Wedding
We started the wedding day itself in a lovely suite at Newport’s Vanderbilt Grace Hotel.
Flowers by Semia
Flowers by Semia provided the floral design and the flowers were simply perfect.

More gorgeousness from Flowers by Semia. I love all of the purple and pink tones in the bride’s bouquet.

After the portraits we ended up at Belle Mer, the site for the ceremony and reception.

From the ceremony the day flowed right into the cocktail hour, held just outside the Belle Mer ballroom and on the lawn.

It was the perfect time of day to be outside and the sunset was spectacular.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the extraordinary cinematographer that we worked with that day. Brett Culp was unobstrusive, kind, and a joy to collaborate with.
Confectionary Designs
Confectionary Designs was responsible for the epic cake.
District 21
The band for the evening was District 21 and they were AMAZING.

The evening ended by FINALLY cutting that exceptional Confectionary Design cake!

Kiara and Peter, there are no words.  Getting to know you both has been an exceptional treat.  Kiara, hearing about how you fell in love with Peter so sweetly mirrored my relationship with my husband.  Peter, hearing you talk about Kiara and how you love her was simply inspiring.  Thank you for letting me get to know your friends and your family.  Thank you for friending me on Facebook so that I can love you even more while watching you do adorable things like ride your horse and hug your family.  Documenting your day was a joy.  Thank you.

Cape Cod Wedding : Sarah + David

Sarah and David’s Cape Cod wedding all began with Facebook.  Sarah saw a post that I had made tagging a friend of hers and it was all she wrote…she contacted me and we met up one evening in Brooklyn to discuss her day.  Sarah and David are kind people, kind to each other, kind to their family and friends.  It was a gorgeous day in Cape Cod when they were married by the water and a gorgeous evening when they shared a lobster dinner with their family and friends under a crisp white tent.

When I saw this overgrown thicket of hedges I knew that it would be an amazing location for a portrait. Luckily the light cooperated!
Cape Cod Wedding
Perfect sunset, perfect pose, perfect setting, perfect day.

Sarah and David, thank you for everything.  Thank you for scaling a shack in your bare feet, thank you for crawling through a thicket because I swore it would be awesome, thank you for pouring lobster on the tables and inviting me to join you.  I cannot wait to create the sweetest album to commemorate your day!
