When? : December 2019

Winter weddings are always a bit of a gamble, aren’t they?  You’re never sure what the weather is going to be.  Will it rain?  Snow?  Be randomly super warm?  Will you get to go outside for pictures, especially since it gets so dark so very, very early?  Except for about ten minutes of quick Broad Street shots, I spent all day indoors at this exceptional Ritz with Sara and Anthony on their wedding day.  But being “stuck indoors” really isn’t a thing when the place you’re “stuck” in is the Ritz Philly!  With abundant locations for portraits, creative imagery, their ceremony, first look, and reception, I’ll get “stuck” in this space with this exceptional duo anytime!

The bold documentary style has drawn us both in. We like the creative and artful touches (fades, bokeh in lighting, mirroring and strong angles are very nice). We are both drawn to the colorful/psychedelic styles and would love to capture this if possible.

Bold documentary style?  Creative touches?  Mirroring?  Strong angles?   Colorful style?  When I read this note from Alexa and Ryan in regards to their wedding photography I knew I was all in – as if I wasn’t already.  Alexa and Ryan are the sort of people that bring the sun with them wherever they go, from the incredibly sweet way they are with each other to the way they laugh and forge bravely into some of the craziest Philadelphia wind I’ve ever experienced.

From the wind sweeping them through a shower of rose petals down the steps of their church to crawling under scaffolding in the pitch dark for a breathtaking rooftop view of the city, Alexa and Ryan are the kind of clients that wedding photographers dream about : bold, creative, artful, and strong.  They themselves are colorful and extraordinary, so it’s no surprise that they wanted that reflected in their wedding images.

What a dream, what a windy dreamy dream their day was.

Where?  Philadelphia’s Union League

Sophie is a wedding photographer’s dream.  Sweet, soulful, and willing to do whatever it took for a great image.  Whether it was getting ready next to a window in the dark, sitting patiently with her wedding party for a dramatic group portrait, or perching on the Union League’s grand staircase for a solo shot, Sophie was all in, all day.  Sophie and Vincent are warm, loving humans with warm, loving families so it was no wonder that their day was warm and loving as well.  Winter weddings in the dark?  I’m there, every time.

Some people are just…joy.  They radiate light, happiness, that intangible exquisite nature that makes up good people.  You can see it in their eyes.  In how they speak to you and to the world around them. You can see it when their family and friends look at them.  You can tell by the joy that surrounds them on their wedding day.  Both Rachel and Brandon are that kind of good people.  From Rachel singing Once On This Island while putting on her wedding dress to the way Brandon touched her face when he arrived at her bedeken, the entire day was full of moments that simply brought tears to your eyes.  It was a joy to witness, to feel that love, and to document these moments for them and their incredible, incredible families.

Where? The Loews Philadelphia

When? : August 2018

Valerie’s first email to me began with the sentence I really like what you do with light.  It seems only fitting then that hers and Steven’s day was full of gorgeous light.  From the beautiful rooms they got ready in at the Loews in Philly, to the pre-thunderstorm light filtering through the windows for their first look, to the delicate light under City Hall for their portraits, their day was simply full of light.  It’s also fitting, because Valerie and Steven themselves are light-filled, funny, bright, sweet, and endlessly joyous.  The sun held out for them all day, until giving them a glorious ceremony thunderstorm.  I’d spend a rainy afternoon with these two any day!

Ben and Sara, along with their fantastic coordinator Jennifer Supper of Kaleidoscope Weddings, planned for their wedding day to be a total rainstorm from start to finish.  Instead of the deluge that we were so worried about, we were treated to a pleasantly cool, dreamy Philly day.  “If only we had a LITTLE crazy rain for just ONE dramatic shot” we all said as we finished the portrait session…only to have a crazy torrential rain pour all over the end of the reception for one final shot.  Talk about perfect weather!  Much like the weather itself, Ben and Sara were cool, calm, and collected – and why wouldn’t they have been?  Their day was seamless, from start to finish!

New Year’s Eve Wedding

New Year’s Eve Wedding in Philadelphia

Who? : Becca + Hal

What? : Nighttime indoor ceremony and ballroom reception at Philadelphia’s The Logan Hotel (formerly the Philadelphia Four Seasons)

Where? : The Logan

When? : December 2017

If you want to throw a killer party for your family and closest friends, what is the best day of the year to ensure that party atmosphere?  New Year’s Eve, of course!  Every time I shoot a New Year’s Eve wedding I always end up documenting one of the best parties of the year.

I have adored Becca since our first communication (set up by her magnificent wedding planner, Gina).  We talked all things theatre, hit it off immediately, and I just knew that was the beginning of an excellent relationship.  After meeting Hal at their Philadelphia engagement session, it was evident that this couple was a spectacular one.

Becca and Hal chose to celebrate their marriage at Philadelphia’s beautiful Logan Hotel.  Despite the weather being in single digits, it was warm and inviting inside.  The ceremony took place under a beautifully illuminated chuppah, and then the party moved into the iconic Logan ballroom for hours of dinner, toasts, and dancing.

Becca and Hal, thank you for having me at one of the wildest parties of 2017!  It’s always an honor to ring in the new year at a wedding, and it’s extra special when clients are as marvelous as you two!

Winter weddings are always cause for planning, planning, and planning some more.  What if it snows?  What if bad weather makes it difficult for your guests to arrive?  What if it’s too cold to go outside for portraits?  What if?  What if?  Abby and Tommy planned perfectly, and got the best kind of winter wedding : meticulously designed, impeccably executed, and with the most flawless coating of snow on the ground for spectacular outdoor portraits.  It’s always a delight to collaborate with the team at Cescaphe Philadelphia wedding team, and it was so beautiful to see Abby and Tommy’s day come together.  From the deeply personal Amish wedding ceremony to the floral cannon showering the couple during their first dance, the emotion and design of the day were first rate.  It was an honor to witness the love this family has for each other, and an honor to create these images for such spectacular people!

What? : Wedding in a historic basilica, portraits at the Rodan Museum, and reception in a modern hotel ballroom.

Where? : Wedding at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul and reception at The Logan

When? : June 2017

Alison and Jeremy have been a delight to work with from the very start.  From our first in-person meeting to their glorious sunset engagement session, it’s been a joy working with these two and their incredible families.  I have loved The Logan in Philadelphia for years, having gotten ready there for my own wedding back when it was the Four Seasons.  I also well remember the first wedding I ever shot at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul.  The combination of those two spectacular venues makes for a very iconic Philly wedding, and the addition of a quick stop at the Rodin Museum for portraits made this day nothing short of perfect.  The pouring rain  that had threatened all day stopped the second the ceremony was over, and the skies opened up for some gorgeous light during their portraits together, which was truly a sight to see.

Alison and Jeremy, thank you so much for having us be a part of your day.  You truly had a dream team of collaborators working on your wedding, from Evantine to Eric at the Logan, and it’s always wonderful to work with such amazing artists!

Downtown Club Wedding

When I delivered the images from this Downtown Club wedding, the bride immediately emailed me back.  “You literally captured every single emotion of our entire day. I remember every moment exactly. I can’t believe it.”  As a wedding photographer, there is nothing better than making your clients happy.  It’s an honor to document such important events, and this wedding day was an especially brilliant one.

When winter starts to roll around, the sun stops cooperating.  No more long, dreamy summer sunsets.  Now the sun is racing towards the horizon at a breakneck pace, setting far too early.  The clouds block any light we might have, it can’t seem to stop raining, and “dreary” is the best word to describe most northeastern late-fall days.  Not this day.  It was cold and clear, with the most perfect winter light.  More, please?

Philly Hotel Monaco Wedding
We started the day in the bridal suite at Philadelphia’s Hotel Monaco. I love the light in the suites here! It makes for brilliant detail images, and really compelling getting-ready photographs.
Jenny Packham wedding
The bride wore a phenomenal Jenny Packham dress. Her shoes were the perfect compliment to the nuanced detail of the dress.

Right before heading out to see her groom for the first time, Jessica made sure to move her engagement ring to the right finger!

I love the preparation part of a wedding day. There are so many moments to capture, both big and small. I love the light streaming through the bride’s veil, illuminating the detail on her Jenny Packham gown.

Wedding day details are a popular part of modern wedding photography. I especially love documenting details in action, such as the way the light streams through the veil. I think it’s so beautiful, skimming across her headpiece and highlighting the shoulder detail.

After the bride and groom were dressed, it was off to Old Saint Mary’s for the wedding ceremony. How cute are these flower girls?

One of my favorite parts of the wedding day is the ceremony processional. It’s the first time the bride gets to see all of her guests assembled together!

Church lighting can be a tricky thing. It’s the one part of the wedding day that photographers have little to absolutely no control over. Old Saint Mary’s was especially brilliant on this particular day. The sun was coming directly through the stained glass windows. It lit the bride and groom perfectly during the entire ceremony!

I’ve never seen such glorious light in a church in the wintertime! See how it lights up her veil so extraordinarily? And how it highlights his face? So very, very beautiful.

The recessional after a ceremony is another chance to see some great moments. I love how the groom is looking at his bride, and how she is grinning into the crowd!

After the ceremony, there was a break before the cocktail hour. We spent the time going around Philadelphia for some portraits. We started at the Merchants’ Exchange Building. This Old City location is so beautiful, with it’s classic cobblestone streets and beautiful Philly architecture.

From there, we visited Washington Square Park and the Second Bank of the United States. The light here was also completely extraordinary.

Philadelphia was still deciding whether to be fall or winter. The air was crisp and cold, and the trees were struggling to hold onto their leaves.

Jessica and Erik, thank you so much for trusting me with your day!  Thank you even more for spending so much time in the cold for your portraits.  It took extraordinary dedication, and I love you both for it!

Vie Wedding

Marissa and Thomas’ Vie wedding was everything you want a Philadelphia summer wedding to be.  The bride and groom got ready at Philly’s lovely Loews Hotel.  The ceremony took place at the stately St. Augustine Church, just blocks from the historic Liberty Bell.  After the ceremony was over, the bride and groom brought their bridal party to the extraordinary Washington Square Park for some truly extraordinary, sun-drenched portraits.  The reception took place at Cescaphe’s brilliant Vie, a cheerfully vibrant reception space near City Hall and Love Park.

Washington Square Park has a wonderful, warm place in my heart. Right behind where these women are standing is Talula’s Garden, one of the best restaurants in Philadelphia. Marissa and Thomas, I cannot thank you enough for your enthusiasm, energy, and kindness.  I know your wedding photography was very important to you, and I thank you for giving me ample time to create images that I hope you adore as much as I adored capturing them for you!

Curtis Center Wedding

Amanda and Joe’s Curtis Center wedding began for me with an email.  The first line read “I have been in love with your work for quite some time now.”  After explaining the details of her Philadelphia wedding, Amanda finished charming me completely by telling me that she and Joe planned to marry on her parents’ anniversary.  Who could say no to that?  From the Hotel Monaco to Washington Park, the Morris House Hotel to the Curtis Center, Amanda and Joe’s day was a Philadelphia photographer’s dream.  Add to that some really magical light, a brass band procession, and a fantastic party, and you’ve got a day with some of the most effusive emotion I’ve seen all year.

Curtis Center Wedding
We started the day in Philadelphia’s gorgeous Hotel Monaco, a beautiful hotel with equally beautiful light.

Cocktail hour was held in the lobby of the Curtis Center. Since we had taken portraits of the bride and groom, the bridal party, and their families before the ceremony, the couple was able to attend their entire cocktail hour.

I loved the bride and groom’s first dance. This image shows the fantastic emotion that was on the bride’s face from the start of the day to the end of the party!

Amanda and Joe, thank you so much for letting me share your day with you.  For going above and beyond to schedule ample time to portraits, for treating us like family, and for being so incredibly kind to work with, I thank you.  I hope you had a magical honeymoon and I look forward to sharing the rest of your images with you soon!

Front and Palmer Wedding : Jennifer + Brian

Jennifer and Brian’s Front and Palmer wedding warmed my heart for dozens of different reasons. One : Awhile before the wedding Jennifer mentioned in passing that it would be great if it snowed on their wedding day. “Not a lot of snow” she stated “But maybe a little snow on the ground would be nice.” True to her wishes there was an incredible coating of snow on the ground in Washington Square Park for their portraits – and we had the park almost entirely to ourselves! Two : When Brian heard Jennifer coming down the hallway of the Westin to see him for the first time he started crying before she even reached him. Three : My husband and I were married at Front and Palmer less than a year ago and being back to photograph there was deliciously surreal.

Jennifer and Brian, THANK YOU. Thank you for braving the cold for your portraits, thank you for trusting me, thank you for letting me witness how much you love each other, and thank you for having me as a part of your day. It was already magical to be back in my own wedding venue but to be there with you was a true treat.
